Hey guys I'm just trying to figure out if this is a common issue. I just had both CVs Axel's replaced in my 2019 XLT FX4. They were clicking in 4WD while turning (5800miles with Stock tires). Now 1000 miles later on 33s the passenger side is doing it again. Thoughts?? I do live in Colorado and take my truck Off Road alot. Not doing anything Ford hasn't advertised. Wanting to try and figure out a solution. If this keeps happening I will look into getting RVCs custom made.
Edit:
So after talking to RCV performance and some other friends of mine who have the same truck. So what's actually happening is the CV is overextending just to the point of where it is wearing it out and not pulling it completely out. At least that's what they think. And seeing that there is multiple posts and Google searchs saying that this is a common problem I'm guessing that this is mine too. How has Ford not realize that this is a problem?I'm currently running the stock shocks which have no suspension travel whatsoever. I was looking into getting a longer travel shock such as a fox coilover or a king set up. But now I'm too scared to do it with the extra travel I will gain will I just pull the CV out completely all the time. my buddy is replacing his CV and he has the fox 2.0 is that Ford offers as a Ford performance part and he just pulled his CV out of the inner joint over the weekend Wheeling it on a light Trail.

This is interesting because the clicking is usually from a groove worn in the cv outer housing from the balls. Happens because on average your mostly driving straight, so the housing gets worn/grooved in that spot. Then it clicks as the balls go past that groove when you turn. But that takes 100k+ miles atleast.

You're on your 3rd set in under 10k??

No axle hub disconnect on the ranger, so axle spins regardless of 4wd selection.

What’s the offset on those wheels? I’ve always been a solid axle guy for demanding off-road use. Wheel bearings seem to take most of the extra stress of large tires and improper offset, but CV joints? what brand of joint?

I only noticed the clicking when it is in 4-wheel drive though. I don't know if it's only because of the extra binding from the transfer case giving the front wheels power. I'm going to be taking it into Ford service again here soon. Just trying to find out if the parts they used are made of chinesium lol

CV joint boots torn? Doesn't take a lot of sand to trash one.

Only other thing I've wondered about is lifts. I've seen where the more extreme lifts have the drive trains changed to compensate. I don't guess the smaller lifts do this but wonder if it has an effect on CV joints.

Boots are in perfect condition still. Other than being slightly dirty. I only have a 2 inch leveling kit with stock suspension.

Seems like if everyone and his brother are running around 2" lift, there'd be more issues mentioned. So rule that out.

Too much negative camber? Didn't look like it in your photos.

Improper installation? I've seen folks get pretty rough with half shafts trying to get them in.

Only other thing that I can think of is manufacturing defect.

Where any of the the failed CV joints disassembled? Might be some clues in there.

It seems unlikely with only 2” of lift, but maybe some binding at full extenation could cause this.

Just to get more details are the wheels being turned when you hear the clicking? Only when strait? I would lile more info other than when in 4WD.

I myself have a 2019 with 27,500 miles on ot amd have the Old Man EMU lift on it. The only time I get clicking is when I'm a dipshit that left 4WD on on the pavement. And yes that has happened plenty of times. In the off road I dont usually have any issues at all so I'm very curious as to what might be going on with your truck.

On my first set it was when I was turning. On this set that I currently am running it happens mostly when I'm driving straight in the wheel articulates up and down on the trail and when turning.

Hi Chris,

This problem is quite baffling. There are so many folks here that have lifted their Rangers and this is the first reported problem of this nature.... If this was systemic there would be many posts and a few threads. So far you are unique with this problem. It is a problem that needs Ford Field Service Engineering as it appears the dealer is not capable of diagnostics. There has to be something in your mod that has resulted in this condition. Again, if it was a bad batch of parts, this would have bubbled up on these forums. Something is wrong but I am at a loss with the info on hand to even form a hypothesis of what might be wrong.

Wish I could help more....I am out of spit on this one...

My CVs click like this too but only at full lock. It usually happens when going around a switchback. I have a 3" lift and Icon UCAs. I've considered a diff drop.

I appreciate your feedback! Like I said, the first set of CVs that I had it was on a completely stock truck. I did off-road my truck a lot even in stock form. What actions could I take to have someone take a look at my truck and maybe find out the actual problem? Other than taking it to a different dealership what are my options? Could I be off roading my truck too hard LOL??
