Has anyone tried the PUTCO rack? It shows as being compatible with tonneau covers since it mounts to stake pockets in other trucks (on top of bed rails rather than also clamping onto them). The mounting on the Ranger must be a bit different / more involved given we don't have open stake pockets, but this could be a good solution that I'm looking into.

Oh, cool. I talked to their customer service and they gave me some more details. You do have to drill into the bed rails for the Ranger, so in our case we would need to put a few bolts through the top of the bed rails to secure the base of the rack. One of the customer service managers said he had run the rack with a BAK Revolver rollup cover and said it worked perfectly. I'm looking to run a retractable cover, so still need to confirm what would work with the rack. I'll have to get measurements on the width of the rack base and the amount of space that the rails on the retractable covers take up. Let me know your thoughts if you end up getting it!

For sure! I have the weathertech soft roll up cover, and the rails clamp in board of where this would mount, so i'm guessing it would work fine.

I am actually thinking of drilling into the side rails and bolting the cover rails on because the clamps keep coming loose. About every 5 times i access the bed i end up having to either reset the rails or resecure them because they have dropped down a few millimeters and i either can't close the tailgate or can't lock the cover without opening the gate.

Oh, that's good to keep in mind. I think most tonneau rails will work with the rack, but I've seen some retractable covers with rails that jut out a seemingly unnecessary amount. I just don't want to end up getting the rack and then finding out the rectractable tonneau I get doesn't work, or vice/ versa. I'm going to be parting ways with my LEER tri-fold that I've loved, so I want to make sure the combo works and is worth the switch.

I thought about going the route of a roll-up, but a retractable just seems to offer more security, which is a big factor for me. Only issue is that it's also big $... haha

Here's our kayak set-up. It's done and held up very well over a dozen trips so far this summer. We thought we would miss the space in the bed from the canister, but plenty of gear fits beneath it.
  • Ford Embark LS retractable cover
  • Yakima Overhaul HD racks
  • Yakima JayLow kayak carriers
  • Yakima FullSwing Hitch Mount Bike Rack

Looks good! Are those the 55" or 60" cross bars?

Thank you! They’re 55”. We wanted to minimize the overhang and so far they have worked really well. The real test will be when we try to fit a Skybox 12 up there once (if) they’re back in stock. From what we measured, it should fit.

Awesome, thanks! I like the look of the 55" as well. I think I will end up going with this setup versus an actual overland type of rack. Just need something to put the kayaks on when going camping.

I've actually got my wife considering a rack and roof top tent set up so we can take longer vacations or drive back to the midwest from the PNW to see family while flying isn't the safest option. Wish me luck closing that sale!

That sounds like a great trip, best of luck! I'm hoping to do the same rack/RTT-wise. Trying to get the bed rack/tonneau sorted out first and then brace myself for the following dent in my wallet from the RTT. I looked at a RetraxPro MX (retractable all aluminum, with no T slot rails) demo unit and its rails jutted out too far and would interfere with the PUTCO rack, so trying to consider other options to pull this master plan together...

I've had my eye on either the PUTCO Venture TEC rack (https://realtruck.com/p/putco-venture-tec-rack/v/ford/ranger/2019/) or the ZROADZ Access OVerland Cargo Rack (https://realtruck.com/p/zroadz-access-overland-cargo-rack/v/ford/ranger/2019/), and then paired with an Overland Vehicle Systems Nomadic 4 Extended RTT (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PKDCYT...olid=12SY9T79GEI9F&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it) which should comfortably sleep my wife, our 4 year old and myself.

I lean towards the ZROADZ rack. Its a bit spendier than the PUTCO, but comes with lighting and lifting side gates to mount jerry cans, traction plates, and whatever else i can come up with. I the rails run the full length of the bed, so even if i have to modify the installation by drilling down from the top, i've still got a consistent surface to remount my tonneau side rails.

My only question would be how you would remount your rollup cover rails after installing the ZROADZ, since the 4 main support beams of the ZROADZ seem to extend right up to the inside edge of the rails? Is there enough play in the columns to maybe cut the plates that curve into the bed off and space the columns out further to create the 0.5" (or less) gap you need to mount the rollup-tonneau rails?

The side rails have some play already, i'll just end up with the cover hanging over the edge a little more than it does already, with the rails moved further inboard by whatever the thickness of the rack's rails are, and honestly that just gives me more moisture protection due to a larger overhang.

Oh that makes sense. I had no idea the overhang from your tonneau rails over the Ranger bed rails was virtually non-existent. I thought they would take up at least half an inch or so like most other rails I've seen, but evidently I haven't seem them all! Definitely seems like you could make that setup work!

Thanks for sharing that picture, too. Helps me think about options for my build.

Yea this is basically how mine is set up. I have the Truxedo pro x15 cover that only hangs over the rail like 3/16” and a diy rack.
