I'm excited I get to test drive tomorrow morning at the SF auto show Ranger drive event.
I am green with envy Skibuff, have fun can't wait to here what you think.

I wish these Ranger events would come a little more north and stop by Kansas City (It is in the middle of the country) come on Ford :)

Do you mind asking the Ford Reps what type of gas (octane) they use for daily driving? And what type for towing?

Thanks and have fun!

Luckily I check this when I went to lunch.

I asked several of the drivers and they all said they were using regular unleaded. One said she put 93 in once when she was towing. She wasn't sure if it changed anything because she hadn't tried it without.

My test driver said he was getting around 29mpg on highway not sure if that was an average or peak

Thanks for checking. Regular gas for everyday use will save a ton of money.

If you get Gas Buddy, you save $0.05 a gallon for free and if you subscribe for like $90 a year you can save up to $0.50 a gallon all year round. I use premium in my Fiesta ST and it basically covers the extra cost of using premium. You can download the app on your phone.

It's a 4wd not an AWD so the front Differential spins free unless the 4x4 is engaged and the transfer case sends power to it. For regular driving the only difference to MPG is a little extra weight from the 4x4 equipment and the small loss from friction from the front differential spinning free in 2wd.
What does being a 4WD have to do with it? The prior generation Ranger had vacuum-operated disconnecting hubs without an all-wheel-drive system, until they realized how problematic the system was and discontinued it around 2001 I believe. After that, the front end did NOT spin free in 2WD. It turned 100% of the time because there was no disconnect at the differential or hubs. Hence, my question: will this new Ranger have a disconnect point in the front end? If so, it may keep fuel economy reasonably high on 4x4 models.

What does being a 4WD have to do with it? An AWD always has power to both axles and is a much bigger drag on MPG then a 4wd system where the transfer case removes power from the front axle while in 2wd mode. (I don't know if that answers your question but that is what the context of the statement was)

My best guess is that they will use a vacuum locking hub system. When I did my test drive at the Ranger event I asked several product specialists that have been driving them across the country. They all reported MPG results inline or slightly better than the above window sticker and all the drive event trucks were 4wd. I fairly confident we will be getting pretty good mileage out of the 4wd models.

An AWD vehicle only delivers power to both axles when it senses slipping (either mechanically or electronically). Just like the 4wd system described above, both systems have parasitic drag due to the front axle (or rear axle in some AWD systems) being physically connected still.

On the 4wd the front Differential is completely separated from the power train by the transfer case and the front hub will be unlocked in 2wd so the front hubs will spin completely free of the drive train. So in 2wd mode the only differance between the 2wd truck and 4wd truck is a little weight. But you are probably right the small amount of drag difference between 4wd and AWD is probably meaningless. I'm optimistic that the 4wd trucks will have minimal loss vs the 2wd.

None of the 4x4 VINs have an EPA rating yet.
My 4x4 sticker worked a few days ago but it doesn't work tonight (luckily I got a screen shot). No EPA rating though.

The 2wd's I tried weren't working either tonight.

Hopefully they're updating :please:
