I'd be curious to know how pickup trucks are used in China vs. the United States and whom the target demographic for such a truck is in that country.

I'm presuming that the transmission difference is due to the fact that, as mentioned above, this is being built in China. It probably cost them less to source a unit from ZF rather than Ford due to sanctions, etc.
