I had a nice hunting camp in Madison, Florida and I put up a Deerstand and I put a nice boat cushion seat on it. I came out the following week and there was buzzards buzzards buzzards perched on it and I went over and climbed up there and looked and they took all the foam out of my boat seat. .
Never happened to me, but bears will eat the seat cusions off anything. ATV's, Tractors, whatever. But, I have lost several trail cams to bears before I put them into bear proof boxes. Not sure why, but they love the smell of plastic/foam. My cats also go nuts over plastic bags, and will chew on any bags they can get to.

Just opened my hood and found this mess ...
IMG_1471.jpeg

Can't remember the last time I checked under the hood, but probably only a few days!! I refilled the washer fluid about a week ago and did not see this!!

Any idea how to kill/prevent what ever is doing this?

I've never seen rodents eat covers like that before in a week or two. Question is what are oils are they using to make the covers that the rodents/squirrels are so attracted to? Peanut oil or sunflower seed oils?

Gods way of saying "If you're going to spend $150 on a stupid Styrofoam engine cover that squirrels like to eat, spend $200 on aluminum."
Question: Does or can that aluminum cover go over the foam OEM cover?? Or is it a complete replacement for the foam?? (foam seems good at noise suppression and obviously keeping the water out of the spark plug wells... just needs armor plating... )

Place a disposable rubber-maid type container with vent holes drilled in the lid filled with Moth balls on top of the engine. Keeps all rodents at bay.

I'm not convenced of that. Our mechanic told us to do it, and we put them in the garage and RV. Seems the mice used them as beanbag chairs.

You're in Virgnia where the rodents are hard-core. Here in suburban California the rodents take offense to anything thats not organically grown.

I tried everything chemical with no success. I ended up going with the ultrasonic about two months ago. They moved from the cover to the battery so I put the reflective tape above and they haven't bothered it since.

Update - I went with a pro ... he's put out three bait boxes and a couple of traps. Signs of the buggers in my garage as well. Happy with the service as it's from a local company, not some 800 number!!

Will advise ...
