People who live here (Carmel) do pretty well but the ones visiting are usually overwhelmed and freak out, especially on the dual lane figure 8s. The person who hit me was from Indy and hates roundabouts.

Personally I love them. Outside of rush hour I can drive most anywhere in town without coming to a stop. We used to have a lot of 4 way stops and that was a nightmare.

After this crash I no longer drive on the outside lane if I have a choice to be on the inside. If I had been on the inside lane I would have had enough time to avoid this careless driver.

Funny thing, as they take my truck apart I get Ford Pass Alerts. First it was Forward Collision and Park Aid Sensor alerts, I assume they took the bumper off. Today I got a Blind Spot Alert, maybe they took the door off?

To be clear, while I do think Carmel has gone a little overboard, I am personally a fan of roundabouts. I go through two while taking my daughter to school each morning, then go back through the same two going from the school to work, and I love how smoothly usually traffic flows through those two intersections. Much better than the 4-way stops where right-of-way can sometimes be a bit ambiguous, and all too often gets resolved by two drivers just sitting there, each trying to yield to the other.

careful when criticizing Americans, I've found it to be a touchy subject around here
As an American, I will be the first to say an overwhelming majority of American drivers suck. Especially living so close to California, the stereotype is absolutely true!

I totally agree with the statement, drivers in the US absolutely can not drive. My area has been putting in round abouts for years now and they actually work, if drivers pay attention and yield. I guess that is just too much trouble.

Yes, Southeast Alabama has their fair share also (did anybody say Geneva County?)!

Hi,

We have a roundabout that we have to take almost every time we leave the house...We all refer to it is the Circle of Death..few people know how to enter it properly. Several folks have had head on collisions because they turn left entering it....Sheesh!

That's funny about the left turn. But not funny because I've seen it happen on a busy street that had a variety of retail stores spring up along it almost overnight. Two roundabouts were put in to keep traffic flowing. An older gentleman headed to Wal-Mart stopped at the yield sign, saw Wal-Mart on his left, and turned left into the oncoming cars. Oncoming traffic swerved around him, almost hitting me, as the gentleman continued on his merry way, seemingly oblivious to the mayhem he caused.

There are two in North Conway NH that I drive through almost every weekend. People come to a complete stop at the yield signs, even though the cars are in the opposite side of traffic circle. So annoying.

I drive over a lot of Europe to include England, round a bouts are not the problem, American drivers are the problem
Aren't you an American Driver?

Yes I have been driving since I was 14, there was still a learning curve, also I grew up driving in the Ozarks where there are no straight roads, I see a lot of people who not know not to break in a curve.

In an era with no durable ideas, "change for the sake of change" can not be perceived for what it is.
Roundabouts are the latest change... subject to change.
We'll just have to enjoy them while we have them!

Could be change for the sake of change, or could be good engineering based on solid data. (Hint: it's the second one.)
