We had someone ask where we kept all of the Humvee keys.

had to tell a story. but first a confession - Not a Veteran, but not by choice. I did spend almost 13 years in Iraq and Afghanistan as a contractor and worked with some truly amazing Military folks.

I was running the IT service desk in Balad / Anaconda early in my stint. Found out that Humvee's didn't have keys to say I was surprised was an understatement. Anyway in talking with one of the CID guys I asked him about the theft rate. He said it was so bad that they started charging people with "theft by negligence" I think it was when one was "recovered".

Being as we were are a base in the middle of a war zone I commented that it wasn't like they could go far. and he said "they don't". Soldiers would come out of a place like the chow hall and decide they didn't wan't to walk back to their unit so they found a Humvee that didn't have the steering wheel secured, drive it close to where their unit was and abandon it. said they had so many recovered it was laughable.

Between that and the continuous "weapon lost or found" notices on the wall on the way into the chow hall I could only shake my head and be glad I didn't have one to lose cause I surely would have at least once.

Just found this thread! Interesting reading about everyone. Good stuff.

US Army here. 1982-85. MOS = 35E. Basically repaired all sort of night vision equipment. Once at Ft. Hood got a bit of cross training on other electronic stuff to fill in for short staffed MOS slots.

Basic: Ft. Leonard Wood
AIT : Fort Belvoir
First duty unit/station: 1st Cav. Div., Ft. Hood. Sucked. No, SUCKED. Really. Being stationed in TX, not 1st Cav. 1st Cav. was fine. It was being in TX. Civilians outside of post HATED us.
Went on REFORGER '83 while with 1st Cav. Since we were maintenance we were in Germany 89 days total. Good times.
Last unit/duty station: 2nd Inf. Div., Camp Casey, ROK.
Did my last 13 months in the ROK. Good times. Really good times. And to top it off... I was TDY every week for roughly my last 10 months there. Yep. Out on Monday. Back on Friday or sometimes Saturday. Reported to a major in MATO so basically I was out of sight out of mind in my actual unit. Living in hotels for the most part. Towns I used to party in often thought I was a European businessman they were so far from the US military. Nice!

Anyway, was absolutely not a career guy. Went in to do my 3 and move on. Did it. Did it well. But was very happy to ETS. But proud of my service and would not change it for anything. Had some awesome friends in the Army. Lot of good memories.

When I was in basic training, I had a hernia operation. After a day in bed, they told me to wax the floor with one of them. I almost wrecked the hospital !

i passed on that ride. saw a guy fly off and mash his ball bag on the shelf on his way to the floor. that was all the safety instruction i needed to stay off .

a friend of mine that was an older guy worked at bell in texas until he retired. he had all sorts of posters and diagrams of the v22s and other tilt rotor stuff in his garage. I never got in one person. I asked him if he did and he said, "hell no. stay out of those things!" apparently during his time at bell they had some bugs to work out lol.
