It will be fine. I’ve had to put 87 in mine when I was doing some over landing in some areas where premium wasn’t available. A while back, there was an engineer on these forums who was involved in the FP tune who said the software will adjust for the lower octane.
Thanks for that input. I did a bunch of digging and found basically the same answer from a Ford tech. I spoke to the center that put the 87 in. Not sure how they didnt check that even though I mentioned having it. I mean thanks for the free gas but also dont mess it up lmao Ive just been running it easy to let it flush smoothly and will fill back up with higher octane once im down to a quarter.

I installed the FP tune last night. Updating the ProCal4 device, backing up the stock tune and down loading the FP tune to the device went smoothly. I had a little bit of an issue transferring the new tune to the truck though. It went through the erase/write for all 95 blocks but at the end I got a FAILED. The ProCal4 gave me a message; Do You Want to Recover the ECU? I selected yes and it went through the whole process again resulting in another fail. I decided to shut off the ignition and unplug the ProCal. After waiting a couple of minutes I tried again and it completed the flash successfully.

Initial impression is it's much like the FP tune I had on my 17 Ecoboost Mustang more power every where but most noticeable from 5k to redline. It took a few days before I got the full benefit from the tune on the Mustang so I expect the Ranger to get better over the next few days.

What I was looking for and have gotten is a better shifting transmission. Before the tune the shifting from gear to gear did not always feel the same. On my 50 mile round trip to work today the shifts were all very consistent and smooth, on par with the 9 speed in my wife's Jeep Cherokee. The other pleasant surprise was even though the tranny is more willing to down shift in drive now it will still allow the rpm to drop below 1500. My Mustang and the stock Ranger felt like they were lugging when the rpm dropped below 1500. The Ranger with the tune is quite happy to cruise along at 1200 rpm.

All in all a good investment.

Welcome aboard. It gets better for sure. ?

So for anyone who wants to update the tire size when you goto the tire/gear ratio screen with the Key On Engine Off press on the numeric value and a keyboard pops up to let you change it then you have to follow the screen prompts key off ... wait... key on etc. then it updates the value.

I sent the paperwork to FP on Saturday to register for the warranty and got confirmation this morning that my Ranger vin is registered with FP for the tune warranty.

Quick question - I was under the impression that the tune needed to be installed by a certified Ford tech for the factory warranty to remain. Is this not the case? I'd love to save the $250 and just install myself

Thanks!

It needs to be installed by an ASE certified tech, does not have to be a Ford tech. My son is an ASE tech and manages a tire and service center. I did the install my self, had my son create a receipt for 1 hours labor, sent that, the purchase receipt from Levittown and a copy of my son's ASE Cert to Ford Performance. Did the same thing when I installed the FP tune on my Ecoboost Mustang.

I had to get a Ford certified tech to install the FTP in order to get the warranty. Ford said they required the work order.

That is not true and it is stated in the Ford performance warranty document. Just needs to be an ASE certified tech. I had originally called Ford Performance before I did the tune on my 17 Ecoboost Mustang and they told me they just needed a copy of the purchase receipt for the tune, a receipt for the install and some evidence that the tune was done by an ASE certified tech.

So I have done the install twice now and created a receipt for the install from my son's shop and used his ASE certification as evidence. In both cases I have gotten confirmation from Ford Performance that my vin is registered for the warranty.

FWIW, if you ever have a powertrain failure that is determined to be the result of the tune Ford Performance covers the cost of the repair not Ford Motor Co.

I’ve done some reading about the Ford Tune I think I have partial information overload lol so if this has been asked and answered I apologize now.

It’s clear that if done by Ford OR a ASE certified Tech it doesn’t invalid the factory warranty but what about the Ford extended warranties? I have the Ford Premium 5yr/125k extended warranty. Would getting the Tune invalidate any of the extended coverages of that ?

The Ford Performance tune has its own 3/36 warranty that replaces the factory 3/36 warranty for failures that can be attributed to the tune. The factory warranty stays in place for everything else. You can down load the warranty document from the Ford Performance web site.

Once you are past the 3/36 and into the 5/60 powertrain warranty or extended warranty if you have a failure that can be attributed to the Ford Performance tune Ford Motor Company could deny the warranty claim. Ford Performance does not provide any coverage after 3/36.

That being said in my 9 years of owning Ecoboost powered vehicles I have never heard of anyone with the Ford Performance tune having had a warranty claim denied.

I'm new to the board but not new to Ford Rangers. Bought the Ford Performance Tune/Calibrator/Filter and installed during the summer of 2020. Numerous timeouts when attempting to download tune from Calibrator to Lariat. Dealer and Ford Performance were at a loss. Took the entire mess to a Ford Builder/Tuner in a nearby town - he was successful after 5 attempts.

Read somewhat later there was a firmware issue with the Calibrator and a firmware update was issued at a later point.

Good increases in performance and fuel mileage, with most notable increase in performance is in the midrange. Use 93 E0 exclusively. Around town, meter always shows 400+ miles available after refueling. Driving to Florida and back later this year, I expect the available mileage to be much greater, as around town, I can drive the meter to 32 mpg average. 8582 miles on the odo at present - still a long way from being fully broken in.

So how much for a receipt from your son's shop? :sunglasses: ?

I had asked him about that for someone on the Mustang forum. He isn't comfortable giving receipts for work he didn't perform to people he doesn't know. I won't pursue it with him anymore.

I relate this story just so folks know that they don't have to go to the dealer and pay an exorbitant price for the install.

I was posting it in jest as I'm sure flags would be raised by this one ASE tech installing the FPP in trucks all over the country ?
