Hi Everyone - I have just joined this forum, but I have been following it for a long time. It was the main place I researched before I bought my 2020 Lightning Blue Ranger Lariat with the FX4 package back in November. I love the truck and all the valuable information that this forum has provided, so thank you to all of you!

I am hoping some of you can help out with a noise that I am hearing coming from the truck. It happens sporadically while accelerating and braking/slowing down. It seems to only happen below 10 mph. While sometimes the noise will not occur, I have had a few times while driving (usually after I have been driving for more than 30 minutes) where the noise will happen very frequently, happening every time the vehicle slows down. So much so to where my girlfriend and mom have noticed the noise, and asked about it. It sounds like a 'whomp' noise coming from the front of the truck. I have so far only managed to capture it happening sporadically on a couple of recordings (attached), but I plan to document that next time I hear it when I am on a longer drive and it is happening constantly.

I did take the truck in yesterday to a Ford dealer here in Denver, and as I suspected they could not replicate the issue or notice anything out of the ordinary when inspecting the truck. They did point me in the direction of the TSB SSM 48690 (which seems to be the same as TSB SSM 47812 - 2019 Ranger – 10R80 - Whine Noise), but I do not think this is the same kind of noise.

I understand I might be grasping at straws here, but for a truck with 2,300 miles on it the sound just doesn't sound right. As I mentioned, I will hopefully provide more information or proof of the noise the next time it happens, but in the meantime I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction (or just tell me I'm hearing things). :)

Noise begins around 3 seconds in both recordings. You might have to turn it up to hear them.

i listened to it several times, and i have no idea what you're referring to.
then i played it backwards.

warning to all....do not play it backwards. I plead with you.

hi Shea,

My hearing is gone so cannot help by listening to the recording. How hard are you braking or accelerating when this noise occurs? You are sure it is coming from the front of the vehicle? Not much do go on and being intermittent will make diagnosis at the Dealer problematic too.

Would likely need to drive your vehicle and experience this noise....tough diagnostics!

Hard to tell from the recording. Is it happening during downshifts? While in Drive push the "+" button on the shifter, it will bring up what gear you're in on the dash. See if it happens while the truck is down shifting.

Good luck tracking it down

I listened to it with a pair of studio headphones and can hear a single knock sound. I had the same type of noise on my f150 during accel and decel and finally figured out it was a loose tailgate latch. Also check the storage area under the rear seats and make sure there's nothing rolling around.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I know it's very hard to tell, but hopefully I can bring back some stronger evidence soon.

Thanks for the response Phil - You are quite the legend on the forum!

I am braking and accelerating normally when I hear the noise. It seems to me like it is coming from the front suspension area, but the sound doesn't happen when going over bumps, etc. Like I mentioned, it seems to become much more apparent after driving the vehicle for a long time. I am hoping that I can get a much better recording or video at some point soon. Thanks again!

Hi Shea,

Is this sound repetitive or a single event? I am leaning toward driveline related if a single event. Sort of a slip/stick noise. If it is repetitive then we would be trying to isolate to wheel speed or driveline speed and the frequency difference is noted. The current technology at the dealership can track the frequency orders and help determine if wheel speed or engine or driveline speed or engine speed. Try different gears when accel or braking...see if this makes a difference. Note the gear. As you might see...decoding a customer for noise problems can be very difficult. We do have technical related terms, but the customer has no knowledge of these "technical" terms. Growl, Moan, beating moan, low pitch whine, high pitched whine... and so on. Add intermittent and you have a very difficult time diagnosing. So. Wheel speed is thump.........thump.......thump. Diveline is thump.thump.thump for example...It gives a directional idea of where to look.

We can eliminate brake and brake rotor as it occurs on acceleration. Probably not a tight U joint as this would be at all vehicle speeds. Noise from the front may be associated with the front axle lash...is there a difference in sensitivity of the noise on accel vs. braking? I know...bunch of questions and maybe though provoking....it might be for naught but might help too...

Thanks Phil! So I might be able to eliminate a few possibilities after today. I was getting into the truck this morning (while it was off), and heard a very similar (if not the same sound) when stepping in and sitting down. Almost as if when the truck moves side to side, that is where the noise is coming from. Again, seems as if it's coming from the front end. Does that sounds like something from the suspension or sway bar?

Hi Shea,

It certainly could be suspension related. Can you rock the vehicle side to side and produce...this would be helpful as you can have one person rock the vehicle while you crawl under the front end and see if you can pinpoint the noise. A Mechanic's stethoscope with the metal diaphragm removed (just the tube) makes a very directional device to radar in on noises. Cheap diagnostic tool for locating noise generators/wind noise for example

BTW...you do know that the fuel pump runs for a brief time every time you open the door?

Well, somebodies gotta be that guy, so I'll be your huckleberry. I have that problem from time to time also, but she settles down after she's through yelling at me. :)

It sounds to me like the driveline binding issue that several people had. Your slip yoke on the rear driveshaft might need to be greased.

Mine sounds like that as well. To me that sound usually happens when the upper ball joint goes bad you will hear a pop when it loads and unloads. I assume on this new of a truck the balljoints are tight and good, so the next obvious thing was the driveshaft. I think there's another thread on that where Phil the Legend took it off and greased it himself.
