I've had all the TSB's done, my trans has been out twice and I thought they got it correct this spring, i thought. Now at 44,000 miles it is shifting hard or slipping between 3rd and 4th. I went to the local honda dealer who had a 2023 Tacoma with 52,000 miles for sale. I drove and liked liked the Tacoma and had i tentions of trading in the Ranger and buyi g the Taco.
But when we sat down they offered me 13,000k for the truck. Now wait, Carmax offered 21,000 and KBB says its worth 23 or so on a trade in. The appraiser said "Did you notice the soft shifts from 3rd to 4th? I don't want your truck because I'd have to repair or replace the trans. I'd probably send it to the auto auction and dump it."
I'm so glad I bought the extended warranty. Please fix this POS so I can dump it!

Sorry dude it’s BS. I have a feeling there will be a surplus of used rangers and f150s in the next couple years due to people dumping them as warranty expires. My experience with the ranger has pushed me off from ford entirely, and it sounds the same for you. Honestly if you can I would just take the 21k to not worry about it anymore. Also try Carvana as well.

I've never purchased an extended warranty before in my life, i told the salesman it was a F. O. R. D. and i had better get it. Glad it did.

Yeah I don’t blame ya, all they need to do is issue a recall.
I saw you were looking at the Tacoma, I’ve been eyeing the new 4Runner. My brother in law got one of the Tacomas and he loves it.

I drove the wife’s truck this weekend and noticed a hard downshift from 4 to 3 every time I came to a stop. When we got hers, we bought the extended warranty and it’s covered up to 100k miles. Currently at 45k. We’re gonna make an appointment with the dealership and get it repaired/replaced but I’m wondering if it’s worth keeping after that or if we should trade it in before something else goes wrong.

These transmissions seem to be hit and miss. My 2021 has 65k miles and still runs smooth. Her 2019 seems to be showing signs of issues already. Other than the transmission, I noticed the leaf springs are warped and there’s a squealing noise that comes and goes. I think it’s the driveshaft carrier.

I test drove a Tacoma when I was shopping around before I went with the Ranger. I know Toyota is all hyped up but I wasn’t really impressed with it. The one I tested (can’t remember what year it was) drove like crap. Suspension was stiffer than 2x4 lumber and the interior felt and looked kind of cheap. By the time I went around the block, I told the salesman I wasn’t interested but thanks for letting me try it out.

I’m not Toyota guy but what’s the deal with Tacoma’s? Seems like everyone and their brothers drive one. Am I missing something?? lol

I had a 2015 and a 2017 and they both were fine, i was living in Michigan then and kept 2 tubes of sand(about 150 pounds) in the bed to ride better. My only issue are the seats are flat as a board, the new ones are better. If you take care of a tacoma (maintenance on schedule) you'll easily get 350-400k miles before having to even think about opening up the engine.

It truly is a cult like following.
I owned a 2009 and had a love/hate with it.
Horrible gas mileage
Frame was rusting.
Weak rear springs, like real weak
More recalls than any other vehicle I owned.

Good side
Easiest motor I ever worked on, as in tune ups.
Oil change was the best ever made. The filter sat on top of the motor in this little cup. Buy a few feet of fuel line. Put it on the drain nipple and crack the filter and let it run out for a few minutes.
Some reason they went to a cartridge set up on the bottom of the motor with the 3g line. I think they are back to a normal filter on the bottom of the motor.

It was a fun truck, and I like the 6 speed.
Reports I've read are even with a turbo engine it still gets bad milage and its low powered.
And out of the 3, chevy, Ford, the Tacoma is still more money.

I think the draw is aftermarket is endless. Like the jeeps.

not gonna lie your description of the Tacoma sounds like my ranger. Stiff suspension and cheap interior. I think a lot of it is that it is one of two options for a non American brand true midsize truck(No hate to the ridgeline, it has its place). I know a lot of people who won’t buy American brands because of issues, but I don’t know anyone who buys American because they are better, seems to be driven by patriotism. I think if you had more companies come to the US with their midsize trucks, you would see a lot more Mazdas, VWs, Isuzu, etc instead of Tacomas being the standard.

My wife lives and dies Honda and all her CRV's have been great with mpg and maintenance. We have a Pilot now and it's nice but the safety crap is extreme and you can't shut it off. I've looked at the Ridgeline's but if the safety b.s is the same as the Pilot then that is a no go. Maybe i need a 1960's C10 or F100 and enjoy the slow.

The Ridgeline is basically a Pilot/Passport pickup

I test a drove tacoma right before I bought my ranger and I had literally the same experience. I was at the Toyota dealership with my girlfriend and she was like this truck sucks. Than we went to over to Sarat Ford and it was like night and day. It just felt so much better. I bought it that day and had to come a back few days later to finish up paperwork after putting a 500 deposit on it.

OP, sorry about your issues.

These WELL KNOWN issues can be very frustrating.

I recently got my truck back from a transmission rebuild and a heater box replacement.

The transmission is still "learning" right now but it is much better than when I took it in.

The heater box seems to be fine now.

That said, I will soon be getting the new engine in my old Bronco, and if that works out as well as I hope it will, the Bronco may become my truck and I'll trade this.

Even though my issues with it are currently fixed, I still have nagging doubts about long term reliability.

Sorry Ford, I appreciate you FINALLY stepping up and fixing my issues (only due to extended warranty and WAY later than they should have been addressed), but you have probably lost me as a customer.

We were thinking about getting my wife a Bronco for her next ride. Now it's not even on the list.
