Come to think of it, when my 10R80 (original one) was shifting poorly it made this louder than normal whistle (not just the usual shift whistle). Does yours slam 4th gear, have delayed engagement at times (i.e. going up hill the downshifts slip and lurch), and there’s a pause and then the noise?

If so, you’ve described my original 10R80 to a “t” minus the squealing of tires in R which was also a delayed / violent engagement issue.

My newly rebuilt unit does not make any noises nor squeal tires anymore.
Ah yes the crappy third into fourth. At this point I’m just driving mine until the tranny finally gives.

So.......Add me to the list of transmission failures. I just had mine replaced.

Here are the details or lack of details from Ford.

Milage - 63k. Just 3k over the warranty.

Total Cost - $7,838.26. Ford kicked in with a 60/40 split. Ford paid $4,702.96. I paid $3,135.30.
Why not cover 100% of the cost? I don't know. Why cover any portion of the cost if not covering 100%? I don't know. My guess is that this is Ford acknowledging that there is a problem with the 1080R but not wanting to take full responsibility. Either way I am happy that they chipped in a considerable amount and that I did not have to take on the full financial burden.

Time frame for replacement - Almost 10 WEEKS!!!!!
On April 11th I took my Ranger in to Colley Ford in San Dimas, CA for a diagnostic. I finally picked up my Ranger on June 16th. I cannot understand all the reasons as to why it took so long. 2.5 months is a long time to be without a truck that you're still paying for. On top of that, my registration was due in May. The service tech did communicate via text and voice so that was comforting. Most of the time I had no idea what the status with my truck was.

Warranty - 3 years and unlimited miles. Lame. Does Ford really have so little confidence in this transmission?

Symptoms before replacement - Surging, bucking, and slipping. I tried fixing by replacing that sensor that is recommended on the other threads. It did nothing for me.

Diagnostic - The scope was changed a few different times by Ford. They wanted the dealers initial assessment, then they wanted what essentially consisted of a complete tear down of the transmission but in different phases. They couldn't have just asked for a complete tear down up front to save us all time. Instead they needed various tests run with screenshots and estimates. The approval process is what took the longest.

My Take - Hopefully this helps someone on here understand what to expect if they are out of warranty and experience a transmission failure. I bought mine used with 6k miles on it. I highly suggest the extended warranty for these vehicles. At this point I am reluctant to buy another Ford. I realize that all manufactures have their issues but transmission problems are a big one. I would love a full size truck in the future but I am not all that confident in sticking with Ford.
I just went through the same ordeal on my 2019 Ranger. 1 month out of warranty and 51,160. It has been 8 weeks and finally I got the call that it will be done by tomorrow. Ford picked up part of the tab and I got them to get me a rental. My out of pocket for new transmission $3,252.19. Ford picked up the rest of the $10,857.29 (different market different pricing). Let’s see how this new one goes. I agree that Ford knows there’s an issue and they should foot the entire bill.

How did you get them to chip in. I’m in the same situation as you.

So I could not find any emails that I sent or documents. It was a while ago so I don't remember the details.

The mechanic told me that I needed to write Ford Corporate a message requesting that they provide a replacement for my transmission. It seemed more of a formality than anything. I wrote the letter and emailed it to the mechanic and he added that to the remaining documentation. I don't know if this is actually a thing or if my mechanic was used to dealing with Ford for warranty claims. That's what this is. It's a warranty claim. I was beyond the specified mileage but by only 3k miles.

Thankfully Ford did chip in with a 60/40 split. Essentially I paid for labor. I know this doesn't help much. I'll continue to search for the letter that I wrote. Hopefully I find for you guys dealing with the same issue

My transmission completely blew on the Interstate on Sept. 12. By "blew up," I mean it went like you see in a NASCAR race. No warning, but a sudden high pitch squeal followed by white blue smoke. No connection between the transmission and the engine. Just made it off the highway, but my Ford ESP plan could not find a tow truck, so after 4 hours I paid for it myself. Ford ESP road service sucks, FYI, so have a back-up plan.

My 2021 Ranger has 72k miles and was never used for towing. Mostly highway driving. It always had the weird shifts and slips since day-1 when it was new -- but I was told this in normal for the 10 speed. I purchased the super-duper Ford extended warranty last year, mostly because of the well-documented transmission failures. My understanding (from a friend at Ford), is that there should have been a recall for the transmissions, but maybe Ford decided it was not a life-threatening failure?

So glad I got the extended warranty. Don't know when I'll get it back.

Truly this has to be the most fragile transmission. Whatever happened to the glory days of the old C4 C6 transmissions. Even the 6R80 ZF copy in my model seems to be stronger.

Ironically, the Ford Tech told me that the performance tune actually helps the transmission life-span. I don't have that, but I might consider it.
