I think I used 5mm thread. It's been awhile. I do remember having to drill the holes out slightly to get them to fit tight. Didn't want the holes to be too large so the rivnuts would seat properly.
Thanks. I'll take a peek and see if any I have fit. I've got both SAE and Metric. Something will fit, or I'll follow your example.

I used two hard plastic knobs with threaded brass inserts to secure my engine cover. Looks good and easy to remove without fiddling with a socket or wrench.

I used plastic knobs with stainless studs. Clamping against the rubber flap, it hasn't come loose.
