I found a couple of threads stating that other 5g ranger owners had the same issue my ranger had when cruising between 25-30mph. My truck would experience a stutter feel, like the transmission was having trouble choosing which gear to operate at that certain speed range. My truck began having the issue at around 50k miles and progressively worsened up until transmission warranty expired at 60k miles. That’s when I decided to do my research and found that a likely fix was the EGR valve assembly. I went ahead and purchased the part from my local ford dealer for $130. Replacement took me about 10 mins to do and I can happily say the issue has been resolved!!! Truck is good as new ?

Yikes, $130 is steep. Most of us have used the Standard Motor Products one (VP41). I used to keep a couple on hand and replaced them about every 20-30k.

(They come with the gold paint scrubbed off now)

When I first purchased this part for my other Ranger it was less than 70.00.

This is where I got mine from about 2 years ago,and it was half this price ,, https://www.fordpartsgiant.com/part...del=&extra1=&extra2=&filter=(36694;6181;6839)
Yikes! $114.41 It's not half price now. Ford is stealing with regards to parts. Standard appears to be Ford's Supplier. And they are making a profit selling to retailers who sell them for $20!

Figure the retail seller is doubling the price that they pay - $10, then figure Standard's markup is 100% so subtract another $5. This means Standard's cost / unit is $5 or less. And Ford's list price is $166.83! Those two hoses and crimp clamps are not made of gold, and probably add additional $1 to the cost of the part.

I bought the VP41 from RockAuto for $16 several years go, with a 3 yr 36 month warranty. They've since gone up to ~$20. I consider them wear items.

They have been reliable.

---------------------

As an aside, years ago IBM did an analysis on their cost to package and sell a product. They found that is wasn't profitable to sell anything under $50 due to the administrative overhead. If you placed an order for anything less than $50, IBM would not invoice it. Crazy, but true!

They never righted the ship, and have sold off the crown jewels -IBM had 470K employees in 2012, almost all in the USA. They are down to ~250K in 2025, and only have 30K USA based employees ( down from ~50K a year a go)... and are actively reducing them to a skeleton crew, meanwhile IBM has rapidly grown its Indian presence to over 220K employees, including the CEO.

Presently IBM has 342 job openings in the USA, and 2674 job openings in India.

IBM is no longer International Business Machines. It is India Business Machines. And they are dying a slow painful death.

Thanks, I'll look for it. I can tell you a true story concerning both. The fellow who invented the copy machine came to IBM first to demo it. It caught fire during the demonstration, and IBM wished him well, and said thanks, but no thanks!.

Xerox picked it up and soon they had the copier business cornered. IBM had to play catch up and our printer engineers got busy. We purchased a Xerox copier and disassembled it to gain an understanding of the technology.

We had it all figured out and wanted to be sure that we did not impede on Xerox patents. We had a system in house running but it relied on a Xerox patent to move the paper successfully to the scanner glass, so we circled our engineers and began looking at the alternatives. We came up with 10 different ways to move that sheet of paper and ranked them based upon reliability. We then sent them to our patent attorneys to insure they we were not using the intellectual property of Xerox. Our attorneys did due their due diligence and reported that Xerox had patented each of those 10 alternative methods as well. Xerox had enough foresight to protect a competing product from ever coming to market!

We went back to the drawing board and came up empty after a few months of research. A couple of dejected project engineers went to a bar to discuss our options, and things looked bleak... One of the engineers was pondering what to do and was spinning his glass slowly on the table as he talked, and noticed that the condensation on the glass bottom caught the paper napkin and moved it!

The light came on! That method was NOT patented, and we designed a copier around that technology. It worked but t wasn't nearly as reliable as the other 11 Xerox options. We had to live with it until the Xerox patent expired 17 years later in 1976.

I was told this story by one of the original project engineers during my first year at IBM Research.

IBM squandered a great deal of opportunities over the years. Early on, a young Bill Gates offered to sell all right to DOS to IBM for $20K. We were still operating under a massive antitrust ruling which limited how much of the market we could control in the I/T sector. We bailed out Bill Gates, Intel, and many other firms as a result, and Gates took full advantage of the handcuffs placed on IBM by the court. The only reason IBM was released from the court injunction was the judge grew very old and died in office! The man hated IBM with a vengeance, and made it his life's work to rule against us at every turn.

I didn't know our tranny was connected to so many parts...did you know the clicking blender door is caused by the 10R80? The transmission's also been suspected to be the cause for bed lean...God help us...
