Is it me or did I just start feeling my transmission surging, almost like your driving a stick and at a constant speed it kind of shutters back and forth.
So I pushed the button on the side of the shift lever and it brings up the gear its in. This seems to stop that from happening. The other thing it never goes through the gears is jumps. 1 to 3, 3 to 5 etc.
So just how does this 10spd work?

The skipping gears is normal. Thank the EPA.

Not sure why bringing up the gear display would affect shifting behavior.

You can use the button to lock out gears.

I usually lock out 9 and 10 for local driving, but that doesn't change the normal shifting behavior.

For me, it works just as you describe. It skips gears to maximize fuel efficiency. Pushing the button does bring up the gear screen on the dash but does nothing else as long as you only push the plus button. But after pushing the plus button, if you then push the minus button the transmission starts locking out gears starting at 10th and working backwards every time you push the minus button. Pushing plus again stops that and starts adding them back.

10R80 death sequence:

1st sign-trans has long pause after first gear then slams violently into second...
2nd-trans hunts gears up and down at steady highway speed...
3rd-trans gets hung up in high gear at full stop...
4th-trans randomly slams in every gear up and down, fluid blows out...
5th-put a fork in it...

my truck did what you described. i got the sensor described in this above linked thread and it resolved it.

the transmission is still occasionally quirky, but by and large has been rock solid since. i think the bucking/surging started between 30-35k miles (or less) and is now at 73k miles. all good since the sensor swap.

The truck still has an extended warranty on it. Now getting those idiots at the dealer to even listen to me will be a chore.

no, around like page 13-15 of the above linked thread was an EGR sensor.

Egr Vacuum Control - Ford (LB5Z-9J433-B)
here's one source of the sensor: https://www.varsityfordparts.com/oem-parts/ford-valve-exhaust-gas-recirculat-lb5z9j433b

I can't believe they want $90+ for that thing now. when this all really became an apparent issue the sensor was like $20. i think i paid $30. that's ridiculous.

anyway, the procedure for swapped that sensor is insanely easy. toughest part is getting the height up over the engine bay if you're short. otherwise it's just a couple of bolts and some fiddly hoses. i had no idea what i was doing and made it through in under 30 minutes in my driveway. i could probably do it in less than 5 now. it's not worth paying a dealer to do it unless you're exceptionally worried about messing something up.

your call on how you'd like to proceed. give this part a whirl (a $90 part isn't as simple of a guess-solution as it was when it was $30), or go to your dealer. good luck!

is it possible to lock out a specific gear in the mid range? And is there a way to make it stick until you decide to unlock it?

I don't think so.
