I stuffed some towels in my glove so I could bear to touch the downpipe... here's the reading warm.

20221108_132332.jpg

It looks to be at or below 5. I checked it 3 times. Engine still running after driving around for about an hour.
I am very confused...

Let me see if I have this straight:

Assuming there is proper amount of fluid in the trans:

1-with engine off, most of the fluid would drain into the sump and the reading would be above 1 and the stick totally covered.

2-with "cold running" method, the reading should be at around 4-5

3-with "hot running" method, the reading should be at around 5-6

Is this correct?

No, it should be 4-5 when hot. 5-6 when "cold" but engine running.

So if this is accurate, I may be able to a little fluid. Some people have added a full quart to get from 5 up to 4 on the markings.

This is messed up...according the video referenced 40:50 mark... he clearly states that the reading HOT should be at between 5 and 6...so he says to target cold test to be between 6-7...so when expanded hot it would be correct at target 5-6...

BTW...between two numbers is a huge spread...that's a difference of 1-2 quarts variable...

There were a different set of instructions just for the Ranger. It was 4-5 hot fluid level.

As i recall, 12oz took mine from 5 up to 4.

I'm convinced its a little low. Im going to order 1 quart and add half at a time and test it etc.

I thought all Ford 10 speeds are identical? Do you have a link to that instruction?

You're right...I had it backwards...

Hi Clay...it would be great if you could do a reading for both cold running versus hot running...this would give everyone a proper scale to use since most of us (including me) would rather not do the HOT check... ??

My cold running check the level is at 6...adjusted for hot should be at 5...interestingly, I can't hear a thing coming from my tranny even with windows closed and radio off...
I'm actually not certain if it is the transmission solenoids or the turbo actuator that i hear. That turbo actuator is quite noisy so that could be what I'm hearing.

I don't see anything on the stick in cold reading...
Yup, its bone dry. Im convinced it is low, ordering some fluid now. But I won't just dump it all in. Half at a time and take reading after its warm etc.

You are seeing the exact results I saw when i checked mine. I never checked it again cold after adding the 12oz. I do wonder if that 12oz caused it to register on the stick cold.

Edit:. I guess i quoted the wrong person.
