hey all. I've got a 22 tremor without the towing package, so mine is only rated at 3500 lbs. I'm curious what exactly the towing package has that increases the capacity to 7500, and if that's something I can get installed aftermarket. thanks in advance!
Yes you can install a receiver hitch rated for 7500lbs or better and make full use of the rangers towing ability. You can even add factory wiring for a 7 pin. Somewhere within the older threads of towing here. A little more work to add brake controller wiring, but it can be done fairly easy.
Reese makes a very affordable receiver hitch. And you tube gives very simple instructions on how to add it. It is verry easy to do. I did it with my 2020 ranger. Have a 2022 now.
But that is all that is needed, no special shocks, leafs, bearings, gears, nothing of the like. Just brake controller and a receiver hitch.
It's only rated for 3500 lbs due to it only having the bumper/hole in bumper for hitch ball.
The truck itself is rated for 7500 lbs....all Rangers are. Your only limited now as your bumper with ball is rated for the 3500 lbs.
The only items you need to add are a proper class 3 or 4 frame mounted hitch and the 4 plug/7 plug wiring harness, and a brake controller if towing a trailer that has an electrical brake set up.
You can get Ford parts or aftermarket parts.
Numerous posts about adding either/both to your Ranger.
The only parts the "tow" package adds are the hitch platform and the wiring harness.
Everything else is the same on all Rangers....no additional cooling/coolers, suspension parts are added...all the same.
Here is a video. To show how easy it is to install.
This and many many options for a brake cintroller. Even wireless brake controllers if you do not want to fart around with doing wiring or paying someone to do it.
I did the upgrade and wrote it up here. Search on my name and you will quickly find it. It was just adding the hitch part and the wiring harness for the plug. I also did the brake controller at the same time.
As others have said, adding the hitch should be straight forward.
The brake controller is where it gets a little more frisky. And the level of frisky depends on if you just want brake control, or emergency braking....
Adding a hitch is straightforward if you go the aftermarket route. I did the OEM stuff, and that requires full disassembly of the rear bumper which is kind of a pain as its not really meant to come apart... its doable but its a full day job vs an hour or so for an aftermarket one.
