Looks like on the Ford build site when you add tow package {~495} they now require you to add $40-50 tow ball.

Nope. Only be happy when they stop deleting the parts we like and stop adding things we don't need.

Maybe they intend to install the ball in the bumper mount. and the hitch receiver will block you from ever removing it. ?

Yes, adding a $15 tow ball for the low, low price of $50.

Sorry, but a top quality class 3 ball, 2 5/16 inch, can easily cost $50 bucks and some go up to almost $100.. I would never trust my rig/hitch/trailer with a cheap ball.
Cheaper 2 5/16 inch rated for 6-7000 lbs are cheap, but get into the same diameter rated for 15-25,000 lbs will cost you $$$. There are differences in quality.

Good point. I've never had to have one. Now the question is: What is the rating of the one's from Ford?

I would guess it's going to be able too handle the weight and tongue rating of the Ranger...7500/750 lbs, which means a moderate rated ball.
Personally, I have a drop forged heat treated steel ball rated to 25,000 lbs. Overkill, maybe, but I don't take chances.
If it's on the window sticker, it would be the first item I would have the salesman delete and knock the item price off, and go and buy one of my own choice.
Also, I can't see Ford's logic of charging for just a ball. They have no idea what your going to tow, and if you'll need a 1 7/8, 2, or 2 5/16 ball. And a ball is no good without a hitch shank, of which there are multiple sizes, drops, and weight ratings.

I just looked up a 2023 Ranger...build your own, and when you add the tow package it indicates a charge for a 2 inch stainless steel ball with a 1 inch threaded shank...that is a light duty ball for smaller trailers, boat trailers, ect. First thing I would have them delete the cost, and stay away from stainless steel...more brittle than a regular forged heat treated ball.
If you go to ETrailer, a 2 inch, stainless steel ball with a 1 inch shank, runs $40 -$50, so Ford isn't over charging you, but if you need a different size, than a 2 inch is useless.

From Ford's site:

  • This heavy-duty hitch ball is for towing applications up to 6,000 lbs. GTWR 2” ball, 1” shank diameter, 2-1/8” shank length

Yeah, great if your trailer takes a 2 inch ball...useless if, like mine, it's a 2 5/16 inch.
I have about half dozen 1 7/8 and 2 inch balls in my shed that I've accumulated over the years, and have no need for any of them now....more balls then I'll ever need.
