@Fitzmotor may have the correct answer, but I wonder if it might not be something in the ignition interlock, or a wiring bundle in the steering wheel?

seems like we have the exact same issue. My ranger has done this ever since I bought it in 2022. I only took it into ford once and they did nothing. With this, a terrible transmission, thumping driveshaft among other minor issues I can’t wait to get rid of this thing. Sucks the prices and rates are so crazy.
This steering tapping or clunk has only gotten worse over time. And now that the weather is heating up it’s even more pronounced. I feel it’s safe to drive but still makes every ride unenjoyable. Hopefully you can get this sorted, I just dislike the whole back and forth with dealerships and doubt they would be able to fix it.

I think I fixed mine, I pulled down the rubber seal on the steering shaft, then I got the type of spray lube that sprays out liquid, then gels, (actually MC chain lube)

I took a rag, wrapped it around the part line in the shaft where the seal goes, stuck the tube from the lube and my air gun in there, with the rag as a seal, spray a little lube, then blow compressed air to push the lube up the two parts of the shaft, I repeated it several times rotating the shaft.
wiped off the excess, wiggled the seal back into place.

I did this while doing a oil change, with the left front tire off it's not so bad to get at.

I think I got it, I had to do the same thing on my 79 F250 years ago, funny how Ford keeps it's same old problems around for decades.

I say "I think I got it" because a couple days after I did the job, it went in for the transmission again and has been gone for 2 weeks, at least it got rebuilt this time.

I pick it up this morning, hopefully the steering shaft clunk and the miserable shifting are gone.

I hope that works for you. I wrapped mine with

I took it down the whole shaft. I'll see how that works out. Ford put a thin rubber wrap around the top portion of the shaft only.
