Thanks for your reply!
It's also about doing the proper seat adjustments which can make or break the comfort tolerance. Size and shape can also make a difference on where the sit bones are positioned. My sit bones could not adjust to the 1st seat no matter what I tried. It was a WTB Salsa seat with thin padding and probably more for performance than a typical bike seat. Most of the research indicated that gel has the best comfort level and so far working out...hope this is the fix

SL8 Saddle | WTB
Definitely a lightweight racing saddle. Seasoned riders who are in the saddle all the time get used to something like this in a hurry. And that’s just it - it takes getting used to - ain’t nobody got time for that, especially when those two tiny spots on your pelvis settle onto the saddle after a long ride the day before.

So, I get it, why should you have to get used to something when you can always be comfy? Hard core riders don’t want to give up performance for comfort and it’s all about riding position for performance, hence the tiny saddle. With Jason riding a Fizik, he’s definitely about performance and that’s a killer saddle - in more ways than one. ? I’ve ridden a Fizik - actually very comfortable.

Proper shorts / bibs can help too. Especially on the longer rides.
I‘m not sure we’d get Paul into bib shorts. ?

I am Fizik guy myself. and a proper fit for you on your bike is a must. Makes the rides so much better. My first years were messy, now I am dialed in after a fit by a pro cyclist trainer.
Love the Fizik saddle - coming from a cross country MTB racing background, I was a bit of a gram weenie.

Comfort First. Weight Savings all the time.

If you think buying stuff for the Ranger was too much, lets talk a little about carbon and bicycles.

$100 / per gram to save weight.

Absolutely right! I don't think that any bike seat will give perfect comfort like a sofa or car seat but it's a must to have a reasonable comfort level to ride a practical length of distance without having to stop too often. The seat I have now had some of the highest reviews on comfort so decided to chance it since that is my present goal. I'm not a competition rider but just a regular guy who enjoys biking for the fun and exercise. Keep on biking!

There might be some nice baggy mtb shorts for Paul that have a bib/pad built in. Its how I got into MTB casually. Although now I just wear bibs under my shorts. (Saves on the wet underwear chaffing thing)

The forward move in technology creates a lot of considerations and expenses that were not on the table before. As a kid, I would jump on my J.C. Higgins...no gears... only a coaster brake...no thoughts about weight and ride off without any concerns. It's a new game in a changing culture... :)

You've got it! Age changes a lot of things and requires some unforeseen and inconvenient adjustments...it's the way things are.

There are liners for baggy MTB shorts that are similar to Lycra bike shorts.

That had to be a scary experience! You can never tell who's going to be coming up on a service road. It is scary to be out in the dark on a bike without lighting even on the streets. If it wasn't too far, I would probably tend to walk the bike home rather than risk riding it!
In here, when it's dark, we use head lights on the bicycle as mandated by law. Makes riding a bike quite easy at night and best part is that everyone can see you far away. :D
