Has anyone else had their tailgate slide out on the passengers side while going to close it? I’m not sure if some hardware is broken or if it’s supposed to be like that. I know it’s supposed to slide out at a 45 angle but even when the tailgate is down it feels like the passengers side is loose.

Happened to me. I had been hauling river rock and went to close the tailgate, a rock slid in the gap and made the tailgate come off completely. Just lined it up and it went back together just fine.

If you can't figure out what's wrong, there is a tailgate lock assembly that bolts on and keeps anyone from stealing the complete tailgate. That could fix your issue permanently. I owned a 2000 Ranger for 17 yrs and probably took off tailgate only a few times during the time I owned it. I installed the lock assembly on my 2020 Ranger to ensure that it never get stolen..... Maybe installing the damper assembly would help too.... Just my two cents......

I've noticed on mine that if I close the tailgate off to the side or the other it will come unhinged on that side. I was wondering if that was a problem with just my truck. I've thought about putting a tailgate lock on it to prevent that issue.

Is the electronic tailgate lock not standard on all Rangers?

It is , but the additional purpose of the aforementioned device is that it should prevent the tailgate from popping out of place.
Oddly enough, this is the first pickup I have ever seen with this problem. Others were removable but not generally unintentionally.
I may just make my own since I have no use for the keyed bolthead which would be the majority of the expense.

Mine has come out on the right side a number of times. No cargo or anything in the way, simply the act of lifting the tailgate caused it to come out. Quite annoying at times.

Buy a hose clamp and use that. Helps prevent theft. Been doing that on ever truck I’ve owned for the last 20 years.

You just wrap a hose clamp around the hinge on the passenger side. It's slotted so that when the tailgate is at about a 45 degree angle it can be lifted off.
