Just got back from a drive after reading this. Most probably the fan you are hearing. It quiets down after 3rd. And the fan queits down after a few minutes.
Now my transmission does shift a little funky until it warms up after a minute or 2, so I usually start it and let it run for a minute before backing out of the drive. It's gotten better since miles have been added on.
I kind of enjoy crawling slowly through the neighborhood with the fan loudly reving.
A good test is to jump in start it up and sit inside for a minute and listen to the fan until it quiets down then start your trip. See if you hear the same and it shifts the same.
Will do. Yeah I normally remote start my truck to let it warm up for 10 minutes of so in the mornings. I noticed this recently when hopping in and taking off after a few seconds. I’m still a new Ranger owner at 5000 miles. Bought the truck with 1700 on it.

On your transmission question. I was doing some research on fluid types and pro’s and con’s. One thing I noticed about our 10r80 being used is their sensitivity for cold or incorrect viscosity fluid. They do not like that and struggle at non operational temps. Hard shifts or sticking before a shift is not uncommon. That’s why engine coolant is also helping it get to temperature faster with an inter cooler but also aids in maintaining optimal operational temps under loads. So definitely doesn’t hurt when cold to warm it up some.

Yeah an 87 tune is on my list. Glad to hear it hates the cold…makes me feel better. Shifting has been decent in normal as long as I drive it hard. Truck doesn’t like it when I zone out and baby the throttle or when I’m behind an old lady going up a hill. When all I see is knuckles driving the car I know I’m in trouble ?
A tune will take care of that erratic shifting especially the lugging.

They all sound like a school bus when they're cold. lol

Yeah exactly ? that’s a good way of putting it. A tune is definitely on my list. Man you guys weren’t joking about spending my money. I’m gonna tell my wife she’s got some serious competition ?.

Since you're already going to be in trouble just throw in a damper and some Graphene to boot! ?

That’s interesting. I never knew that about the coolant being used to heat up the transmission. Learned something new. I will say this transmission performs flawlessly on the highway. City stop and go driving it lacks a bit. One good way of putting it was comparing it to an untamed horse ready to ride. She doesn’t like to walk, she wants to run.
I know fluid and viscosity make a big difference. Before I purchased this truck I was about to buy a used Colorado (i know, I know…my dad has one and I drove it cross country with him) but read about a few years having transmission shifting problems due to the fluid they used. Called a dealer with the VIN I was looking at and they told me it had to have to fluid change due to the shifting issues. Scared me off. I’m also probably a hypochondriac when it comes to my truck since it’s my way to work (and I work to make money to pay for the truck, but without the truck I can’t work, so no money, and so on ?).

Well I’ve been toying around with my ford points now that you can use them online.

I'm a weirdo that likes the clutch fan noise.
Well now that I know what it’s is maybe it’ll grow on me. I just figured it was my transmission trying to eat itself or something.

Just like me the Transmission hates being cold. ? But once warm it acts normal again. If you want to see a vast improvement get it tuned. It'll still hate it when cold but greatly improved the shifting and smoothness once warmed up.
I noticed the cold transmission thing the other day (22°) but it didn't surprise me.

I barely notice mine after owning it for a few months. Got it last April.

@Msfitoy only difference is I’m still getting letters in the mail reminding me to extend my warranty.
These are from today. God when will they stop? I get 2-3 of each of these every week.

The only thing I'll add is that when the truck is still in warm-up phase the torque converter doesn't lock, so RPM's are a little higher for a given speed until the driveline hits the right temp and the PCM commands lockup.

I don't generally warm up my truck, so I don't know if a few minutes of warmup will get it past that phase or not. Generally takes me a couple miles from cold start before mine gets warm enough.
