Once the cover is installed, there's no place for the dowel to go. The dowel sticks out into the foam hole and the fabric prevents it from falling out. The dowel could be about 1/4" longer, it's not in there tight. I figured on cutting a thin piece of foam or leather and gluing it to the inside of the fabric for a wear surface and that should make it a bit more snug.

To be honest, I didn't give the initial mod a lot of thought. I was just happy to find out that they'll fold. Feel free to modify as you see fit. There's nothing hard about this. The first time took about a half hour only because I took the seat backs loose. Once the headrests fold, the seat back can stay in place. I removed the headrest, removed the cover, took the pics, assembled, and reinstalled in less than 10 minutes this morning.
Love it! Can’t wait to do this myself.

Hah! My 2020 super cab now has folding headrests! Also makes removal much easier as well!

Everything is there except the button and the trimmed hole in the headrest cover. I removed the headrests, removed the cover, cut a piece of 1/2" wooden dowel rod 1-3/4" long and slid them into their respective holes, reinstalled the cover, reinstalled the headrest into the seat, good to go!

What gets me is that the foam is even cut for the button. I would have paid for the hole and button and not blinked. I just don't get it.

Oh, and the folded headrest's highest part is about even with my tailgate in my rear view mirror.

So, now I have folding headrests with hidden buttons.

Almost forgot, thanks for the pics. Once I saw the springs in the pic, I couldn't stand it and went out and took everything apart.
I gotta hand it to you...you figured out a really good & simple solution to the 2020 Ranger rear head restraint fold issue. I followed your instructions to a tee. I did cut a small piece of the headrest foam and glued/taped it to the dowel that rests on the leather like you suggested. Works like a charm! I kind of like it better with no button showing.
Thanks!

Visibility is better out of the rear windows without the slider too. Quite a bit actually.

Just happened to notice while I was test driving a few.

Its a safety issue. Not sure why Ford would eliminate the buttons except ? ?

I was curious if the 2020 crewcab still had the springs In the headrest too, and they do! I was bummed my headrest didn’t come with a button because it lets me fold down the rear seat without having to push up the front seats. Anyway, I opened up my headrest and realized that I didn’t have a dowel on hand, so I tossed in a AA battery- perfect fit! I’ll replace it with something that won’t potentially leak toxic liquid though ?

If only we could figure a way to fold the middle head restraint...??‍♂

Unfortunately, you're on your own on that one. I have a super cab, not super crew. My truck only has the side bucket seats (well, not sure what to call them, really). I don't have anything to take apart!

Wonder if you could adapt one of the side headrest restraints?

I’m leaving it under my rear seat storage. Problem solved!

Hi James,

Back in 1974 when we lunched the supercab for the first time after Dodge lanuched the Club Cab, we called them "flip seats". This is when I found out that I do not do well traveling sideways...not a pretty picture...Hork! Affirmed on the Corporate Jet with sideways plush seats at the front of the airplane...Hork!

My grandfather had the sideways jump seats in one of his fords when I was a kid. Super fun when you're young. I couldn't imagine it as an adult.

I opened it & see it’s only foam & the 2 chrome bars. No hinges or springs like the outboard restraints. When installed it’s the same height as the other ones folded. Side view & rear view. Thanks again!

Phil,

I can't express how much I enjoy your back stories and experiences, although maybe a little too much detail with this one!

Both my old 2000 Ranger Super Cab and my 2011 Ranger Super Cab had flip seats. I really liked those because they didn't take up a lot of room, but were there if you needed to transport an extra person or 2.

A long time ago, my Dad was to take my uncle to Duke hospital in NC from Virginia. It snowed over night and Dad asked if I would take him since my tires were better. Dad went along and rode in the jump seats. After the trip, he commented that the seats weren't too bad. Not sure I would agree.
