My 2022 2WD Ranger with 78K miles on it was getting 25 mpg in regular driving and 30 mpg on long highway trips since 2022. Suddenly it's getting 24 mpg on long highway trips and 20 mpg in regular driving. Truck seems to drive the same as before, except for the sudden increase in gasoline consumption. Any ideas about what would cause this? Taking the truck into the dealership Monday to have my wallet emptied. I hope they figure it out and fix it.

Not enough information. What type of fuel were you putting in before? What type of fuel are you putting in now? What are your driving habits? Do you use the same gas station when possible? Do you go to wherever is cheapest due to the recent increase in price? We need information

Always 87 octane. Different brands.
WaWa, 7-11, Chevron, Shell. Driving habits haven't changed. Usually 55 to 62 mph on highway. Don't tailgate. Not in a hurry to be first at a red light or stop sign.

Might want to give 91(or whatever premium is over there) a try. Though it may cost more, it will help on the MPG. Also due to mileage it is most likely past due on a spark plug change(look in the book and you will see the severe schedule calling for it at 60,000 miles).

Don't do it. The transmission doesn't like being babied!

I wonder if it is time for the Walnut valve cleaning treatment. Does it show any other symptoms?

I'm happy to see my truck average 23 mpg on the highway, haven't seen this number lately because the wind has been blowing 40+ mph almost every day this week. On 89 octane, even with the wind blowing like it is, the truck still manages to average 20 to 22 mpg city and highway driving. No complaints.

The most important is to do a Live Data Monitor and see what the Fuel Trims are at Idle and Cruise also record the MAP and O2 sensor readings

This will provide an indication on what is actually happening with the fuel, and it depends on what they are reading.

I posted this awhile back for some references of normal readings- i might need to update this for better (more detail) and more importantly better screenshots

Is your battery in good shape, found similar results until i desulfated and took a very long drive. I have 50k miles on mine and its a '19. I also tend to use 93octane... Local driving i am around 25mpg and highway north of 28...mix driving somewhere around 25 to 26. Fresh oil, air filter, tire pressure impact these numbers to varying degrees.

That's what I see up until 70mph then drops to 25. Prolonged cruising on flat ground at 55mph gets me 28.4 of so.

So at 70mph you see a change in performance.... Best guess, and this is what airlinetech was leading you to..
Air flow sensor, oxygen sensor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter... The boiled down explanation is something isnt working as it had at lower speeds, when at highway speeds you are sucking gas at faster rate...those sensors work with the computer, the computer tells trans what to do...i am a fan of auto mechanics for dummies, but there are some fabulous explanations here on some of the systems

Spark plugs are cheap and easy. I would go there first. I had a slight misfire around 25k miles and plugs cured it. Gained at least 1 mpg after
