Reality has reared it's ugly head and he is now going for a new Honda Civic Hybrid, which I didn't think much of when he said it, but it runs surprisingly well, and is WAY more affordable, especially insurance...
The WRX for him (21 year old with perfect record) would have been over $800 a month , AND they INSISTED on a $1000 down first , which I've never herd of before ...
Civic is $170 a month with nothing down, I assume the down payment on the WRX is because some idiots can't drive and have totaled their new WRX's before they even made the first payment, but it could be some other reason I guess...
My son has had a regular Impreza for about 4 years now and loves it.
Oil filter is right on top of the motor and easy to change, OTOH it calls for spark plug changes every 60k and you have to jack one side of the engine up off the motor mounts to change them so it goes to the shop for that.

I tried to get him in an Impreza but he likes the Civic better , he's only drove the Forrester, so he's in for a surprise if the snow gets bad , I'm sure the Civic is OK(for a fwd) but the Forrester is a beast in the snow...

Get a set of good snow tires like Bridgestone Blizzaks. Buy all four. We have had Blizzaks on my wife's last few minivans and they go as good in snow as my 4x4 and probably stop and turn better.
The difference between them and regular tires in the snow is astonishing.
Firestone Wintermasters cost a bit less and are also very good.

As it turns out , the Honda Civic Hybrid is a poor boys WRX (but without everything) it's a nifty little car that will cost him about $600 a month (payment + insurance) with the WRX being more than double that, he loves it so far, it's weird to me , when you "remote start" it may or may not actually start the gas engine , which made me think it wasn't working, he did good I think...

Really diet ? I think a new WRX deserves some sugar !
FWIW, Steer clear of diet soda. Known links to dementia. I just lost a buddy (Nuke Sub Nuke Reactor / Weapons Officer) to fast onset Parkinsons. 18 months from onset to stepping to the other side. He constantly had a diet soda in his hand.

Same with my recently deceased sister. She lived (and died) on the stuff.

Cool car!

I'm 60 and have never been able to drink any kind of diet drink, some start off ok, but the strange aftertaste is horrible to me, hate them all , maybe sugar ain't all that bad...

My daughter has one it's a 2018 and she has well over 100,000 miles on it. She has kept the oil changed and done all the periodic maintenance. I think she's had brakes done and a couple of other items that needed done but the engine and transmission and the rest of the rotating mass have not failed her and she drives it pretty hard.

I love the snow while driving my Focus, especially while I have the optional winter wheel set that I ordered with the car installed.

fellas, it's a WRX. there shouldn't be a soda of any kind in it. just a vape pen. @Doc did the dealer give you your official WRX vape pen at the time of sale? if they didn't, then you got taken for a ride. it's part of the look! you could shred travis pastrana in the back woods of who-knows-where and jump jumps higher than him and everyone would say, "dude has skill, but he don't have his vape pen so it don't count."

thems the rules.

-----
the above is full of sarcasm from a former WRX owner who misses his former ride, and somehow never received his vape pen from the dealer, either.
