Snowmageddon in Texas

I don’t care where you live. This is a challenge to drive on.

When I was a teenager, we went through an ice storm (no snow). We definitely were not prepared for it in Southeast Alabama. Power was out only a couple of days, built that was more than enough for me to appreciate electricity and the linemen who keep it running. I hope you all get your power up and running soon and stay safe dealing with that ice!

I've very well aware of the logistics of Texas. I drove from El Paso to Texarkana in 12 hours. I didn't want to spend another night in that god-forsaken state. I can honestly say that hell has frozen over

I didn't say it was this cold. And yet the texas utilities didn't learn when they had trouble providing power in 2001 when it got less cold, and the report issued then pointed out that the lesson also hadn't been learned when they had the same sort of problem when it got less cold in 1989. Either texas can decide this time to put money into infrastructure to survive rare (but 10-20 year rare, not 100 year rare) conditions, or they can handle it on an emergency basis again next time. It will require government mandates to force that, private operators have no reason to do it voluntarily.

Luckily you live in VA and it’s not your problem. You don’t need to rally AOC to rescue those heathen Texans.

I am sooo sorry for my friends in TX! I am absolutely in shock that the so called leaders of TX let this happen. I know that states that don’t often get weather like that often, but in this day in age, horrible. I like live in Pennsylvania where we are little more prepared for this type of thing. PPL (Pa Power & Light ) has invested MILLIONS in infrastructure in last 10 years. We can send a rover to Mars - GO PERCY! but can’t supply power to one of the largest states in the union. God bless you all! BTW my morning at 15 degrees

All I can say is this is another example of why we need to bring nuclear power back...cleaner than oil/gas/coal, cheap, reliable and steady. Doesn't need the sun, doesn't care if it's cold or not windy and, did I mention "carbon neutral"?

Back to the theme, I remember doing a job in NC...we flew into Greensboro during a snow storm (they got about 2" total). Our final destination was 60 miles south, so we rented a car and got on the highway...cars off the median, off the shoulder, and here come two maniacs from New Hampshire doing 60....we got to our destination and they had boarded up the town, closed all restaurants and stores...but they had power and water. But this was back in 2005

Our final destination was 60 miles south, so we rented a car and got on the highway...cars off the median, off the shoulder, and here come two maniacs from New Hampshire doing 60....we got to our destination and they had boarded up the town, closed all restaurants and stores...but they had power and water. But this was back in 2005

Yep totally agree...several nuclear plants in PA are being shutdown....and yes I remember TMI accident in late 70’s....PA was and still generates lots of power that supplies many New England states.... peace from PA COAL COUNTRY

And luckily there's no radioactive waste. And we've clearly seen that low probability events like texas cold snaps or nuclear accidents never happen, so we don't need to even consider massively expensive emergency responses.

Also, one of the nuclear reactors in texas shut down because it got too cold, so your starting premise was just wrong. Nuclear has the same possibilities for design oversights as any other source, but worse consequences for screw ups.

We have the Palo Verde Nuclear plant not to far from me. It supplies parts of AZ,NM,CA and TX. But I'm sure they'll be trying their best to shut this down too.
