Third time in a row, I inserted the snap-together rod into the socket and lowered the spare without having to look through the hole or under the truck. Eyeballed the angle and stuck it in there on the first try. Learning has occurred:).

Probably jinxed now, but you have to recognize the good stuff when it happens. Need to haul a refrigerator tomorrow, and the tires are ready.

Hi Mike,

Now for the phase 2 test. At night in a torrential rainstorm... Good luck! :)

I, unfortunately, just had to change a flat tire after work a couple days ago. All in all, it was an easy task, about 20 minutes. I did have to look under the truck to get the rod into the socket (insert dirty joke). Once I got home to repair the tire, I realized I left the locking plug on the bumper, it was still there after 3 speed bumps and 8 miles of highway driving.

Rant

What made it unbearable was I had just gotten off work where I spent the last 3 hours on my back, under and in a machine, twisting and reaching in ways I wouldnt normally. To top it off, as employees walk by, they says "Oh No, do you have a flat tire ?" No, I like to change aired up tires cause im an effing moron. Not one person offered to help.

/Rant

I’ve been carrying an emergency rain suit for the past 12 years, in preparation for this eventuality. It’s still in the original packaging, and I hope it stays that way. I miss the desert…

thats when i call road side assistance

theres a time to die, and i have never felt it should be on the side of the road at night in the rain changing a tire.
bring the bigger truck with many flashing lights and let me stay safe inside my cage.
Hi RP,

Little back story. Wife came home from picking up groceries from WalMart store pickup... Left front tire indicated low pressure and there at the top of the tire was a big nail visible in the wheel house. So option A was remove the tire and take it to Big O tire shop. Option B was to use my tire repair kit. Using my floor Jack, raised the left front tire after loosening the lugs (Torqued to spec of 172 FT-LBs!) Elected option B and got out my repair kit after removing the nail, Dry Wall screw actually... Rolled the tire back to the shop and tried to get it up on my work table.....21" rims....too heave for me to lift easily, but managed to get it up on the table. Repaired the tire and then aired it up and checked the leak was fixed...All good...then back to the Lincoln to reinstall...I could not lift the tire up onto the lugs. I ended up using a wood block onto which I could roll the tire/wheel and push onto the lugs. Retorqued to spec (my torque wrench goes to 250 FT-LBs).

It was then I realized that I cannot change the Nautilus tires on the side of the road. I simply have lost so much strength in old age.... So keeping AAA current for after the Lincoln road side service expires....

best,
Phil

I have been known to lower the vehicle rather that raising the tire to reinstall. It is a little tricky to get the jack to lower to just the right height but, dang, those Jeep wheels and tires are heavy.

After reading this I had to go out to the garage where I still have the crate that was in the bed of my old Ranger more or less from 1998 to 2020. It held a bag of tire chains, tow strap, tie-downs, basic tool kit and...this.

I never wore it but it did a great job of stopping small objects from falling out the bottom of the crate.

I’m not sure that will even unfold anymore. Looks like it may have become one with the packaging.

Dad always told me to keep a big heavy garbage bag in the truck. Takes up very little space. Can be used for picking up trash, as a port-a-potty, as a privacy screen, protect seats from dirt/mud/etc, drop cloth, sun shade, tarp for the roof/bed, rain coat.
