This is odd, right? It looks like the inner side of the air filter had bits of rubber pull off into the air intake.

Seems to defeat the purpose ... :/

Assume i should trash this and get another, yeh? It was a due for another cleaning...

Obviously you have over 1,000,000 miles on your Ranger or it would still be good !!!
I'd give K&N a call and see if they will stand behind their claims of good for 1,000,000 miles

The filter came with the Ford Performance tune so I never thought about the warranty. I will call KN and see how they handle this situation.

But besides that , it seems like a lot of rubber has been pulled into my air intake. I swapped in a standard filter and haven't noticed any performance or odd issues. But where would that rubber go/accumulate??

Unless those parts got stuck somewhere in the intercooler, they probably just got chewed up by the Turbo and burnt out the exhaust. I wouldn't worry too much since it is soft, not like it was hard plastic. Not saying it isn't anything to be upset about, just guessing you are ok.

I went back and forth a lot on getting another K&N since I replace them rather than clean them. I decided to go the route of the WIX filter. The performance differences are so small that it really just isn't worth it to me. Really for it to be worth it, I have to feel the difference in performance or MPG and I couldn't tell either filters apart.

I am also factoring I am in the desert now so daily driving and towing is usually more dirty than when I lived in Huntington Beach, add in direct injection so no fuel to clean the valves. Off-road is obvious but especially if you follow someone, I just didn't feel the risk was worth it.

I too have the FPT and continued using the stock filter from day one without issue. I sold the new K&N from the kit on Marketplace lol. So you should be fine using a stock filter in place of the K&N.

I never installed mine that came with the FPP. I drive too many dusty roads here in AZ. Years ago, I did some testing with a 347 stroker motor in an '88 Ranger. Many 1/4 mile passes at the local drag strip and there was absolutely no difference in time or MPH between a paper filter and no element in the filter box. I concluded that paper filters flow all I will ever need and keep more dirt out of the intake. Granted, a sample size of one. Just go with the paper filter. I have been trying to give away my K&N but no takers. :)

You just casually mention 347 in a tiny 88 Ranger lol that must have been a fun truck!

I agree, I think the right sized paper filter (which engineers actually seem to have sorted out well) does the job.

I am pretty sure I have seen bolt on vehicles only get 10-15hp from high air flow filters, you just can't even feel that. Yeah it all adds up but for a truck it makes less sense than a street car.

Well, when I was 19 I had a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 With a 428 CJ. Drove my new born son home from the hospital when he was born in a V-8 Pinto. Had a '72 F-100 with a 460 4V swapped in to it. Ya, the V-8 Ranger was one in a long line of fun, motor-swapped Fords. :) Sadly, a lot of the photos have gotten lost over the years.

Personally, I avoid K&N products like the plague… When I was in college taking a heavy equipment tech course, they did testing on all the popular filter brands out there. K&N came in last every time when it came to actually filtering particles out.

I know that K&N is more focused on allowing airflow but to me, a filter is there to protect and do exactly what it’s called, FILTER lol. I’ve always run Wix since that day. They perform the best when it comes to filtration and do a better job protecting your engine. Guess it comes down to personal preference.
