I don't get it. Are they claiming that this small engine can power a vehicle via electrical generation?
Something seems scammy to me. Or maybe the total area of the piston -- even doubling combustion (combustion each side) -- leads to significant power increase over an equivalent V4 piston area?
If so, what's different than using an efficient existing V4 to generate electricity? Is it just the double-sided nature?
But if it's the same power as (say) a V4, then where's all the cooling, lubrication, etc? Modern engines are designed small and light as they can be already, to be reliable long-term. So, they're pretty massive.

I think I'm missing something...

Most likely just a scam and BBC and i24 news fell for it.

It's a viable concept. It's basically a "gas" powered generator designed from the ground up. They threw away what we know of as our current combustion design and started fresh.
Automakers are currently just slapping a small 4 banger into engine bays and calling it a hybrid. No real new thought process besides the engineering to connect the engine to the wheels.

Unless people start thinking and designing outside the norm, we will be destined to the same outcome.
If it is indeed real, how long before the people who make money creating the ICE, or EV's for that matter, find a way to squash it...

There are all sorts of new and interesting ideas being floated about. Mazda is bringing back a smaller version of the wankel (rotary) engine to be used as a generator in their new hybrid electric. This guy (Engineering Explained) does a really good job explaining it:

Wankels may be an excellent fit, but they will need them to run them at a constant high RPM for best energy efficiency.

And, let us not forget the "Goat" !!! Not Pontiac, but Goat Power.
Notice the "spare" goat...when one gets tired, you just switch em out to a fresh one !!!
Runs on peanuts, or garbage, or whatever it will eat...
