This sucks for sure. Something just does not compute about it.

Yeah, runs fine one day, next day needs a new engine. I would think of a lot of other things before a whole new engine. New way to look at "shotgunnin' the problem"

Reminds me of the time I went to use my Toro Z mower for the first mowing of the season. When I put it away for the season the previous year it ran great. It fired right up as usual but ran like total crap. Turns out it blew a head gasket. How the heck that happend after just sitting for the winter I'll never know.

Yeah I mean, I tell people it was always working fine till it wasn't. The thing is, with an engine failure there are usually other things that fail prior to a whole engine replacement. I mean, it happens *cough, Toyota v6 TT*

I would recommend a second opinion, but it depends on how deep they looked at the Low Compression.

As if this just (popped up) and no indication of issues prior, my troubleshot would direct me to what electronically could possibly cause this issue.

Now granted I have NOT dug into these systems much or dealt with them. I just know that they are incorporated into the 2.3 Engine.

1. VCT - Variable Camshaft Timing, this could throw off compression - holding the valves open
2. Cylinder Deactivation Solenoid - this would kill the cylinder
or a sensor input that these 2 systems are looking at (In an engine start condition)

So, for me, it's hard to grasp an engine replacement for this, at this point without a deeper look as anything mechanical (low compression bad enough for a no start) would have shown some kind of drivability issues (misfire, rough, stumbles, intermittent starts etc) not just all of a sudden

My hunch it is something electrically controlled and since the engine will not start, it may not be picking up a failure code and MOST LIKELY the VCT system is the issue.
I would ask the dealer if they looked into these systems as a possibility, as it sounds like they do not know (confirmed) cause and are shot-gunning a 10k engine at the issue.
GET A SECOND OPINION on this.

@Aharrington96 Ask the advisor to have the foreman go over the issue with the tech. This just doesn't add up. It really sounds like a misdiagnose. There should have been some diag. work done to arrive to this conclusion. $2k to tear into it to find out what is wrong? If the labor rate is $150/hr, that is ~13hrs to troubleshoot? This is almost to the point of reporting them to the BBB.

This reminds me, my buddy had a 300zx v6 twin turbo (man, that was a nice car, sleeper). It didn't pass smog, long story short one cylinder had very low compression per compression test I did. Surprisingly, the thing still idled pretty pretty smooth AND he took me out in it on something like 10lb boost and it still pulled hard (18-20lb normally).

So a no start because a bad engine? Makes no sense. Like the tech at least should give his reason for it. He is acting like he just wants to flag his 1hr and move on rather than do real troubleshooting.

Sounds sketchy to me , I'd need a visual, you gotta at least point ? to something and say "see ? that's the issue" before you get ANY money... 2k for a look see is crazy? imho...

Did the dealer do both a dry and wet compression check? If the compression goes up wet, then it'$ $omething internal, and most likely $omething mechanical, not a sensor.

What are the compression readings. Possibly one or more injectors stuck open. Fuel wash will cause low compression. I don’t believe their diagnosis at all.

140k miles truck would not start. Took it to the dealer and it’s low compression. Tech recommends putting in a new engine for 10k… or could possibly tear into it for 2k and still need a new engine. Anyone had these issues? Trucks in great shape sucks to have this problem so soon.
Compression testers are pretty inexpensive and there are only 4 cylinders. Usually only one or two cylinders might be low, but the motor will start and run rough on the remaining cylinders. What are the trouble codes? Is it getting spark?

Did the tech put a code reader on the engine to see if there stored trouble codes?
