I dropped my plastic trans pan today. I'm letting it dribble before I install the PPE pan tomorrow.
The factory pan had a heat shield covering the right side and part of the front. I reckon it is to protect the plastic pan from CAT heat.
I'm considering pitching the shield into the recycling. I suppose it could help a tiny bit with heat rejection, but that heavy aluminum PPE pan probably won't know the difference.
Thoughts please.

Replace the shield. It reflects heat and provides an air insulation barrier from the heat of the catalytic converter. It works. It is thin for a reason - less of a heat sink, cools very fast.

TJC is right… it may seem trivial but sometimes things that look stupid have a solid purpose… besides keeping extra heat away from the transmission is never a bad thing.

Think about it this way.

Ever been in front of a campfire and held your hand up to your face and the heat immediately stops? Blocking IR, that's what those thin little shields are all about.

Great analogy…(that is what it’s called right? Or is it metaphor?… damn it I’ll ask my wife later she knows about all that type of stuff?.)
But it’s spot on… with how stressed we can become with the 10r80’s… (peace of mind for some, but it’s proven primitive reliable tech.) that little napkin like piece of sheet metal does a job.. now could you get away with not having it? Sure could…
What is the lifespan degradation between have/have not? Who knows, we will have to operation “paper clip” that one.
Details of aesthetics are great too, however how often are you going to be peaking underneath the vehicle to look at the (and yes it is lovely.) pan… then be like… aww man that stupid heat shield really ruins the who look of the vehicle?..

personally I’m in the function over fashion in this situation… even if it’s marginal…or pita to reinstall… my mind (which is stubborn and I argue with myself constantly.) is keep it or find a better version of it…….. Not having it.. well that would make my butt clench so hard I’d pull a muscle ?

It's all buttoned up, with the shield. The shield is held with three 6mm nuts on stud screws that clamp the pan.
The nuts were seized on 2/3 screws and the 14mm drive on the screws backed out through the shield leaving torn up oversize holes. I used washers to hold the shield and plenty of anti-seize on every thread.
Steel screws in aluminum are a given for corrosion, and I had plenty. If I have to drop the PPE pan again it should go easier.

Yep, I didn't have one seize and still had one hole get 'torn'. I don't think that thing is any thicker than a coke can.

I think they crinkle the heat shield for rigidity. It also adds (marginal) surface area.

I had the same problem with tears at the shield bolt holes, and small washers did the trick.

I also had several screws/studs that had rust on them... On the threads that went into the transmission! No corrosion externally!

Q: Just how does that happen?
A:
Cheap / marginal parts.

Never ever!!

Lol, to be fair, the engineers probably do their best job and then purchasing, marketing, and legal get hold of things.

Bean counters are an engineer's nightmare!

Oh they do for sure massive respect for the nut jobs that spend the time to make and improve things… my dad was one of them…. Budget it the engineers worst nightmare… and fab techs never have good relations with each other….
Maybe that’s why dad and I didn’t get along ? he designed stuff… I built it and complained about how it was designed ??
