I can remote start my 21 XLT by voice with Siri, or the Ford Pass app. If I add the Perimeter+ alarm system it will allow remote start with the key fob with lock-unlock-lock. I would not use the key fob to remote start as the range is short, But I can start it from Siri from anywhere I have cell service.

I just bought an XL STX, and was very surprised that with this basic an option package, I can do a remote start with my phone.

It's a nice feature to be included for free. The app can be glitchy at times though and some have had a lot of trouble with theirs. If you find yours acting up sometimes uninstalling it and re-installing it helps.

So my question is how is it starting from the modem through my cell phone do the app?

The app communicates directly to the BCM thru the modem . If you get a key FOB the truck would still need the receiver unit for it to operate.
