I’ve had the wide sole of my winter or work boot catch the gas pedal while braking. Scary.

Could it be yours might be doing it the other way around and catching the brake while using the gas and effectively “riding the brakes”?

It wouldn’t take much to engage the brakes enough to heat things up and warp the rotors.
I did this while doing autocross, WOW! Braking hard to turn through cone & ending
up going straight faster!!!! LOL!

OP, a few people had issues, I don't remember seeing many but maybe I missed those post. Brakes are consumables, buy RockAuto & be done with it. As long as you can do it yourself.

Unfortunately, I was at a busy crosswalk - yikes!

I don't think I saw this as what could cause this on here, but in the past I have seen where a wheel wasn't true at the point of contact with the hub, either from bad manufacturing , or something got between the wheel and hub at some point and the wheel was torgued down with a small particle there. Once the wheel becomes untrue, it will pull, warp the rotor every time it is put back on. Rust, large paint chips, ect can cause this. Just a thought .

OK, I know you all know the deal... my rear rotors warp every 18k miles like clockwork. 3 times now (four if you count the time they did a garbage job turning them) So the last time I did powerstop pads and brand new motorcraft rotors. There were no powerstop rotors available, and no ford pads available. It's been 18k miles.... warped... again.

So... searching and reading it looks like no one has found the issues (other than the fact that I was told I don't hit the brakes hard enough and the truck only uses the rear brakes)..... has anyone found a better solution? Anyone out there who has had this problem (not everyone does) found a set of aftermarket brakes that last more than 18k miles?

I seriously love the truck other than this one stupid issue. Photo just for fun.

Thanks,
Shane

PS... in case you were wondering... the warranty on brakes... is 18k miles. ha!
Hi Shane,

This is quite puzzling.... At a broad brush stab at it, I would say the root cause is too much heat due to a component that you are not replacing when you do a brake job and thus a repeat performance. Prime culprit might be the calipers sticking or the parking brake is maladjusted. Is your truck out of warranty? Wish I could put more definite cause, but there are many variables to consider. If wheel tire induced a tire rotation would move the problem to another location like the front...Doubt this is the case.

Good luck!

Best,
Phil

Nah.... after the last go round I started really watching my footing. Plus... I am far from the only one with the issue. Almost all of the accounts I have read have been right at that 15-18k mile mark. I think it's a combination of the ABS programming and just plain old shitty rotors. The question I have above is... does better metal yield better longevity. If not... I'll skip the high dollar rotors and throw on the 50 dollar ones from rock auto!
Probably, but don't judge it as a better rotor because it cost more. That goes for anything. People sometimes believe a product is of better quality because it has a higher price.

I’m curious to know if the parking brake return springs would cause an issue if they were missing. Anyone know? Are the springs still there Shane?

Could be. This goes along with what Phil stated. If the rotors warped 3 times, it's time to start looking for another cause.

I would judge it more by the existence of slots and cross drilling than cost.

I’ll check and report back. I don’t think about the parking brake much though… I just don’t use it much. Pretty flat here and I’m just not in the habit of setting it like I used to be with a manual trans.

No experience with the "higher carbon" rotors - but have had experience albeit decades back with not great quality Ford rotors. R1 has a decent reputation.
