I have a catch can on my 2020 Ranger. It has about 22,000 miles on it and I gets maybe a third of a can of oil, and it's a small can between
I empty it about every oil change. Before 5000 miles so it keeps all that crap off the valves it's a good thing.

The Ranger has and air oil separator on the side of the block where the PCV valve is attached. It is basically a series of baffles that the oil fumes flow through before it leaves the engine via the PCV. The direction changes of the fume flow causes the oil to drop out of suspension and drain back into the pan. All of these devices you can buy to prevent oil fumes from going back into the engine are air oil separators.

All three devices in the video are air oil separators. The term catch can came from the fact they look like a can and catch oil. I would call the device in the video being referred to as an air oil separator a catch can, a much more sophisticated one but still a catch can.

It's all about what you are trying to accomplish and how much money you want to spend.
