No it isn't, but you will find several sites that mention it. The only reason for those covers is it looks better. They do hold in heat and heat is bad for any engine, it's really just common sense. Many people just remove them

I live in Vegas. Would this increase underhood temps to the point of overheating?
I lived in AZ (where we get temps much hotter than LV) and never had any issues with either of my Rangers there.
