camping at Usal Beach along the misty northern california pacific coastline

driving the thoroughly enjoyable logging/access road from highway 1. it was raining this week and we enjoyed having 4wd to make the slippery mud and ruts on steep grades easy. in the distance is the destination

Usal beach. black sand on the pacific. for the most part we had the place to ourselves, thanks to the season and the weather.

the puddles on the way out. not an issue for any truck, let along a passenger car with some cojones (its relatively high clearance terrain here and the puddles are deep), but this made us laugh. prior to this truck we were adventure-camping in a grand caravan from 2000. that specific year had a unique quirk- the serpentine belt would tend to pop off the idler pulley when you drove through any puddle going more than 3mph. (ask me how i know.. ask me how many times this happened....)

it took a full seven months of driving this ranger around for me to finally not get anxious driving through puddles.

I definitely pushed my comfort level today going off road. I have more dings than i care to count on my bash plates and lower control arms. All cosmetic nothing broken. This was just my checking to see if i can feel my rear tire floating.

the truck still works! its the first time i found an objective advantage to living out of a two-room (cab/bed) mobile home. when its below freezing at night, all the frost and icicles are in the bed, and i dont have to scrape the inside of the windshield off before driving away in the morning.

starting up golen canyon, death valley national park. fun canyon wash driving with a stream running down most of the way

IMG_1672.jpg

getting into the rock garden coming out of Golen canyon. some technical rock crawling gets you to Mengel pass. lots of wheel lifting on the swoops, and a couple spots that required a few minutes of trail building to keep our stock truck off the rocks.

mengel pass, at sunset. with a lot of lens flare. my LED upgrades to the fog lamps have made after-dusk offroading better.

on the way out, Butte valley

great drive. will have to come back and spend more time here.

Got the ol' Ranger filthy again last weekend at The Mounds ORP near Flint, MI. I went wheeling with 2 Jeep XJs and a Wrangler JK so I didn't have super high expectations besides having fun in the mud while I watched the Jeeps do their thing.

BUT! I was shocked again at how capable this truck is. I didn't attempt a few obstacles where the truck's long belly/rear overhang wouldn't let me, but I certainly didn't get left behind. Towards the end of the day, we found ourselves in a gnarly, swampy, peanut buttery field that got the Jeeps stuck. Ranger to the rescue! I never cared much for the terrain modes until that day. Between good tires, great power, and superb traction control, the Ranger excelled at tow duty to get the Jeeps free. In fact, I was pushing the truck so hard that my ABS motor overheated. I gave it about 10 minutes to cool down and I was fine, but I was a little surprised to see the dash warning.

Here are some excellent photos that my friend took, as well as some Youtube videos from my friends' channels. Hope you enjoy!

P.S. We had a special visit from David Tracy from Jalopnik :) he's an awesome guy and super down to earth. Thoroughly enjoyed meeting him and wheeling with him!
