Post your off-road pics.

Went out and tried once again to complete this off-road loop I've been wanting to do for awhile. And once again, I turned back. Might not have had to, but since I was alone, it was cold, and I didn't have much fuel (my mistake), I didn't want to risk it. Got to swampy bit on this track which was frozen over. But not frozen enough because once I drove onto it I broke through, which was fine for the first bit. But this last short "puddle" was pretty deep. So once I broke through that one and the nose dove quite sharply, I figured that was far enough. Had to back quite a ways down the trail to find this turn-around spot. The back-up camera helped a lot during that since I had to fold the mirrors in at points to keep them from getting knocked off. Still a lot of fun though!

Always better to turn back and try again another day rather than get yourself in trouble - especially when you are by yourself. I learned that lesson the hard way several years ago. Same holds true when hiking.

Yeah, I finally got offroad a bit this weekend and I ended up having to make the same choice! I was running the Tin Cup ORV Route in Michigan and got about 5 miles in and saw some pretty deep and slick looking ruts! They were doing some logging along the trail and some of the logging equipment just completely tore up that part of the trail! About sticking a stick into the ruts and not finding the bottom after a foot and half, and being on my own, there was no choice but to turn around! I would have thought hard about doing that in my Jeep, definitely not in the truck at this point! Better to make it back and try another day than being stuck for who knows how long!

Just some pics from my Offroading fun this weekend! As mentioned in the last post, I was running the Tin Cup Springs ORV Route in Lake County, Michigan and it was quite a good bit of fun! This was the first time I took the Ranger off road, so i took it easy, and a lot of the trail was a good width for the truck, but the biggest issue was so much rain and snow that happened in the week leading up to running the trail, that there were definitely some good mud puddles, and the trails were pretty slick with mud and a few spots of some good ruts!

tin_cup_spring_motorcycle_trail_and_route-1.png

The trail was also sandy at times too, which was it's own challenges, but I ran with the truck in 4 High and the rear axle locked (due to so many ruts with slick mud, and the truck never missed a beat! And the Mud and Ruts mod in the terrain management was actually really nice too! It kept the RPMs a bit higher to keep me much closer to boost if I needed it and the throttle response was really nice with cruising around! Now, I would say, i could have just used 4 High and been fine, heck, a bunch of it I probably could have run 2 high, but i got all the gadgets, so might as well use em, right? We ran about 5 miles of the trail starting from the staging area in the SW, but that 5-6 mile point was where we hit the rutted out portion of the trail from all the logging and decided it best to turn around! But here's some pics from the trip!

Good review! We don't get enough rain out here to test it in muddy conditions so it's mostly sandy washes in the valley or head up north for some rocky terrain. I agree it's fun to test all the gadgets out whether you need them or not. I really liked the trail control,I didn't need it but it was fun to use.

Looks like fun!! I'm excited to get out to an actual trail/orv park but not so exited to wash my truck afterwards. :sunglasses:

Yeah, well, my Jeep is also still muddy from the last trip with it too! So I definitely have some vehicles that look like they had some fun right now! But that ceramic coat on the Ranger did a pretty good job and should hopefully make cleaning that one pretty easy!

One good thing about living in this great big sand box is it's easy to just rinse the dust off your truck. I remember back east some job sites were all red clay and in the spring when all the snow was melting it was just a red, soupy mess. It was fun playing in it but what a job cleaning it after.

Hi Dave,

Okay, another back story. I was managing Ford's off road racing...Baja, out West etc. We decided to get involved with the short course Mid West off road racing. So we brought our West Coast teams back to Crandon Wis off road track. What an awakening. The local teams were coating their racetrucks with WD40. Every team had a gas powered pressure washer. What the Hey???

Such a different sport. Mud in the tenth degree. West Coast teams did okay but we did not kick butt as anticipated. A real learning experience, so we approached Jeff Dorr and Scott Taylor, Class 4 and Class 8 champions to join the Rough Rider Program. I got a real appreciation for mud...sticky, shoe clogging MUD...Wow!

Best,
