I try not to think about it for exactly that reason.
Not a big fan of "crooked".

Yes.
popular opinion is it's either a defogger heater element, or it's for camera alignment.
I'm going with heater element.

Yes that's the (IPMA) defrost grid
The Auto-High Beam - Is the IPMA camera itself sensing forward images

The Auto Headlamp (Lighting-Sun Load) sensor is the small protruding sensor on the dash.

Wow, I didn't realize until a moment ago, that this is an older thread.
It's good to resurrect things sometimes.

Anyone that knows anything about digital imaging knows it has to be at an angle. If it was horizontal or even close, it would be picked up as a fake horizon line and confuse the camera in its distance tracking. Remember this is the camera used to detect closing speed of an object for AEB. The angle allows that fixed line to be filtered out of the digital image.

Sorry all you OCD people.😕

The reason it is diagonal is due to faster and more efficient heating and as @Big Blue mentioned has to do with the camera itself and its field of view and it minimizes distortion of the view by:
The close proximity of the grid to the camera keeps it out of focus and the camera ignores it, plus a angled line such as the heater grid wont be mistaken as horizontal lane markings.

The line has nothing to do with the camera calibration per se as the camera is ignoring it.
But however it is an important part in the overall function (keeping the front view of the camera clear)

So it is a heater grid, with a specific design reason.

Who would have thought that all sorts of engineering would be involved in order let a camera 'see' through a window. That was interesting.
Hum, I'm guessing lawyers had some input, but when don't they?
Thank you Big Blue & airline tech, I learned something.
