All,

Wanted to start a discussion on a new tire from Nokian (the Outpost AT) and see what people think (or if one has already pulled the trigger and bought a set of tires, what their driving impressions are)? The information is pretty limited on the web due to this model being so new, but I thought I would ask nonetheless. The only post that I was able to find on this forum was from "BRAVOHOOK" back in February stating that he was looking to buy some in the near future.

For reference, here is the link to the Nokian site that you can read up on:
https://www.nokiantires.com/all-terrain-tires/nokian-tyres-outpost-at/

Lastly, I would contribute that I reached out to one of Nokian's stateside reps to inquire as to the the specific weight of a particular tire size (I chose 265/70R17, as most of us tend to gravitate to that size in general) and they told me that the standard load version weighed in at 30.7 lbs. If that is true, that is a HUGE unsprung weight savings, comparatively. Additionally, If someone could confirm this, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

After a quick look, I would bet that your quoted weight was for a P tire, not an LT tire. That weight is in line with Other P rated A/T tires from Falken and Kenda. C rated should even be closer to, if not in, the 40's. So, if you are comfortable with a P rated tire, then it is on-par with the AT3W's and the Kenda AT2s, which are both proven tires. For this to interest me I would have to see competitive pricing and more long term reviews.

EDIT: Just saw that you did say it was indeed a SL tire, Also known as a P Tire. These are not LT tires, and are not made for off-road use. They are a SL Passenger tire. That doesnt mean you "Can't" use them off-road, they wont immedietly explode or catch fire or anything, But they probably/might/will pop even aired down.

I ran E rated Nokian Rottiva AT+ in the past and they were extremly light for a 10 ply tire.

One of my coworker is running the new outpost at and so far, he really likes them. Quiet on the highway and good in snow.

TheDo114--Do you think between you and your coworker the pair of you could get some actual pictures of the tire on the vehicle and such (maybe even next to another vehicle with a different set of AT tires for a more pronounced "compare & contrast)? While there are a few "modeled up" pictures from the manufacturer, actual user pictures typically give one a better idea of what the tire looks like.

I ordered a set. Still waiting for them to get here. I ordered 255/70r18's skinny 32" tire. I have had nokian tires before they are pretty awesome. A little soft but hopefully this one will meet my expectations. When they get here I'll snap some pictures. From what I could gather was that this size weighs in at 39lbs.

Heard about this on another site. It stated that a fair amount of Nokian tires were being produced at the St. Petersburg location. In that same post, however, it also stated that a plant stateside at Dayton Tennessee had been started in order to to take better advantage of the North American market.

Sorry no zoomed out pics but here's some pictures of his tires. They are LT275/70/R17 on a jeep wrangler.

They look nice and the sidewall is pretty aggressive. They have some Kevlar in them and if they're anything like the Rottiva AT+, they are a super sturdy and puncture proof tire.

I would be very surprised if a 265/70 AT tire only weighs 30.7 lbs. And if it does, I wouldn’t want it. The stock Hankook in 265/65 weighs 36 lbs and most consider that a very light weight tire.

Its because its a SL tire, which is equivalent to a 3-ply I believe. I have no doubts their LT tires are amazing ,especially with Kevlar, which is what makes the Kenda tires so good!

The Hankook I am referring to at 36 lbs is a SL tire as well. The LT version of the Hankook weighs 44 pounds. I’m guessing that 30.7 number for the Nokian is incorrect. Even 40.7 would be a lightweight AT in 265/70.

My local tire shop says they weight 47.4lbs per tire in LT265/70/R17.

30.9lbs for the P rated 265/70/R17

Tires and material are designed in Finland but 85% of the production is in Russia. If the percentage would have been ~20% I'd bet they'd canned the production there already. Takes years to build the new plants to move the production out so they are pretty quiet about the fact.

Here's from the financial report:

  • The tire plants are located in Nokia, Finland, in Vsevolozhsk, Russia and in Dayton, Tennessee, the USA
  • In 2021, 82% (87%) of passenger car tires (pcs) were manufactured in Russia

I think that’s almost impossible. I recently exhaustively searched for SL (p) tires in 265/70/17, with weight as a big criteria. About the lightest I could find were the Cooper AT3’s at 43lbs for the S rated tire. The think the SL Hankooks in 265/70 were 40 lbs.

Yeah, I already asked him saying how come the P rated tire was so light. he answered saying he made a typo and its suppose to be 38lbs. I believe that number. Nokian have always been super light.

They are a premium tire and the spec shows it. You also pay for it when they're not on sale.
