Is the sheet metal strong enough to handle the dynamic load of the gas weight? What is it 7lbs er gallon? You got 4 gallons back there? 28 lbs bouncing around a dirt road would be what like 50ish pounds at the bottom of the bounce cycle?

Not a bad idea but completely illegal here, only water cans, or diesel can be mounted to the front or rear of a vehicle. Jerry cans containing petrol fuel have to be secured within the body profile which pretty much restricts their use to a ute, diesel inside a wagon is OK though.

6 lb per gallon to be exact. And I agree with you on the possibility of the dynamic weight causing some problems

But people driving around with sports bikes or atvs with the backends resting on the tailgate won't?

I'm not sure I am getting the same vibes as some of you.

With the tailgate in the upright position versus open and down it will be different. When it's down and you have an ATV or part of one we should specify sitting on top of the tailgate it's fine because it's designed that way. When it's in the upright position and closed I don't really believe it's designed to have any weight hanging up like your intending. Don't get me wrong I do like the idea it's just trying to figure out a way to do it without causing damage to the tailgate

Im still not convinced between the hinges AND the metal U bracket latches any damage would occur, maybe if it was only a handful of bolts on the back plate they might sheer. But there are like 16 bolts on that panel.

It's not really the hinges or the latches I would be concerned about. It's more of the tailgate itself. Regardless it's definitely worth a shot
