Around here at Home Depot, 2 x 4 x 8ft Douglas Fir is $2.98, #2 Southern Yellow Pine is $2.85. But i remember it was up to $9 during the "shortage".
What's funny is that the description says:
  • Made of wood for enhanced durability
It topped out at around $11 here. I had another home improvement project that I delayed by a few months until the price dropped below $8.

The dynamics of the pricing was interesting. At one point when the price was rising rapidly I bought a few boards and pressure treated was cheaper than regular pine. I assume that must have been related to differences in inventory turnover.

Hi Ted,

I love Menards! Wish we had them in Tucson...

best,
Phil
I'm not saying I shop a lot at Menards, I'm just saying when we moved to WV, they opened a store in town literally the same day we moved in. Clearly their market research revealed that us moving here is what would make the new store financially feasible.

Our other option in town for Big Box Home Improvement is Lowes. I needed an interior French door when thing like that were still subject to a lot of the pandemic supply chain constraints. Lowes quoted me 91 days. When Menards quoted me 7 days, I insisted the guy had to be wrong because there's no way they could get it that much quick than their competition. He admitted that things had been a little slower, so it's possible it could take as long as 10-12 days.

It came in 6 days. And it was $100 cheaper than Lowes.

Menards excels in certain areas where others sh*t the bed. They don't always have the lowest prices on certain items (exterior doors) and their rebate system is sort of a gimmick. Regardless, I think they still beat out the other guys (Lowes, Home depot). I just wish they carried Dewalt tools!

With a renovation continuing this spring at my cottage, I’m sure happy to see prices almost back to normal. Plywood, 2x4s, baseboards, etc. were all quite high for a while. The only thing that didn’t go through the roof seemed to be PT lumber.

Anyway, glad to see the lower pricing. We all need a bit of good news every now and then. This seems to be a now and a then.

I still love Menards, I worked there in hardware during college. I was poor so I was also a bit of a prostitute. When the ā€œsave big moneyā€¦ā€ jingle would play, I’d drop everything and dance. Id even tell customers to excuse me for 30 seconds. Then I would get paid by some of the senior guys. This went on for a couple years and unfortunately became my thing. Still enjoyed my time working there though. Especially when my buddy was busted on the security camera trying to fly a kite in the lumberyard he made out of a pallet. What were we talking about? Oh yeah, they had good deals too.

did it work?
Lol, no. The video was him running through a lumberyard dragging half a pallet and shrink wrap. He didn’t get in trouble I think because everyone was too busy laughing. I’m betting it’s probably required watching for all new hires.

He also made a fort in the lumber and ordered a pizza to be delivered there.

If Menards would get rid of their 11% Ripoff, I'd shop there more. Only one other option in my small town, but it's hit or miss. Once, I bought a bunch of stuff, had a "rebate" of $12-$13, walked out the door, the wind took my receipt up and over the store, so I walked back in and asked the "manager" if they could print me another receipt---"Sorry, we can't do that"
The "rebate" is basically keeping 11% of your total, then making you wait 6-12 weeks to get your money back to spend at their store.....TOTAL SCAM !!!
