For some of those gallons filled fluctuations, could that come from filling past the tank and a ways up the fill neck?

that's a good question. my previous car actually included the fill tube in the calculations because the tank sat a bit forward and the fill tube was a touch longer than usual. I don't remember the amounts, but it was stated in the manual. I dunno if it's been broken down for our Rangers like that.
