I tried that awhile back. No go, there was an awful resonance issue at speeds around 65mph. Not sure what was up with that. It's because I have the longbox Ranger, the shaft is longer and the shop just couldn't get it right. Worth investigating again, though...maybe the place I went to was just subpar.
Which shop did you use? The one-piece with many successes on this forum ships nationally I believe.

It was a local shop. I'll have a look around and find out which national folks are going to.

You changed the diff fluid and now it's whining?
Curiouser and curiouser.
What fluid did you use, and how much?

That would literally make me sick. I put a bunch of money into my rear diff (eaton e-locker and jeep gears). Fingers crossed it's not that. I'll update the thread after my appointment.
Did you set up your gears correctly? Did it start after the gear change ?

I changed the diff fluid awhile ago and it wasn't making noise. I've got the factory manual and filled to that specification.

Nope, the gear change was about a year and a half ago.

The truck is currently in the shop being diagnosed. A couple of friends and I are taking "bets".
  • My bet: a bearing in the transmission is bad because that would be a great start to 2024.
  • J: a wheel bearing
  • C: U-joint
  • What's your bets if you're just throwing stuff out there?

I say something wasn’t set right or something is going.

Shop got back to me. They claim 1) carrier bearing is bad. This I can believe. 2) They also claim my trans is making a "ton of noise" and needs replaced. Quoted me $7500....seriously. I told the guy to take a hike.

At this point I'm having the shop replace the bearing then I'm getting my truck the heck out of there. I don't believe for a second the trans is bad. Never had trouble with it, never heard any noise out of it. I think the shop heard "driveline noise" and are seeing what they can get away with. Needless to say I'm never using them again. Shame, they've always been great up until now.

The 10R family oil pump gearing does make a lot of noise, so that's likely the source. The plastic pan doesn't deaden the internal noise like an aluminium pan would either.

Ah, yes. That makes sense. The guy at the shop admitted he knew nothing about these transmissions...yet he was eager to replace it, haha. What a joke. Anyway, you made me feel a bit better, so thank you.

They're straight cut gears, so they rattle a bit (depending on the engine of course) at idle, and whine when the RPM is up. The rattle actually led to them failing in the diesel engined Rangers we have here in Aus, Ford had to go to a more durable material to stop the teeth shearing off.

Pic for detail. The 10R family have a slightly usual oil pump drive, but these are the gears that make the noise. The failures were seen with the 10R80 and 2L four cylinder diesel, Ford changed to a billet gearset in 2020 to address this. No idea if that change was specific to RoW Ranger, or all 10R transmissions.
