Update 12/27 ~2PM

Dealer called. Front diff housing needs to be replaced. Said it would take a week to get in. Part is supposedly in Sacramento. I'm in Fresno. I can make that drive in three hours. I told them I need it done by Thursday. All I got was "uhhhh..."
They said it is okay to drive in the meantime. I don't buy that. It has been getting louder. Not sure I am comfortable with doing another 500 miles this weekend with a good portion of that going to be in 4WD out where there is little to no cell signal. All I need is that diff to seize up and leave me on the side of a snow back in the Sierras this weekend.

this is what I see as the fly on the wall at the dealership: ??

Service manager talks to mechanic about the noise....

mechanic gets nervous.

service manager asks him if the bearing was installed when the seal was replaced.

mechanic pushes the bearing off the top of his toolbox and coughs loudly while pointing at the F150 on the hoist.

service manager sees the bearing hit the floor and roll under the tire balancer and exhales loudly.

Mechanic starts packing up his tools and cleans up his work station.

service manager calls you and says we need to change the differential housing.
It is scary how accurate that can be... See that happen several times to various degrees at my job.

I have the truck back. Howling diff and all. Told me to drive it as the part will take a week to get in. Hope it lasts the 500+ miles I am going to put on it in that time. Not much choice as I have no other vehicle.

In the words of Drago. "If he dies, he dies." ?

Oh don’t worry about it seizing up. Normally if that happens it breaks the joints or cv joints leaving parts on the road.

Update 12/31:

So I called, left a message and email the service department on Wednesday regarding how long it was going to take to get my diff and so far I have not received a response back. The part was supposedly coming from Sacramento which if I recall correctly is Ford's large parts depot for California. They said one week to get it...
I get parts in next day from all kind of places as part of my job. I really call BS on their travel time unless Ford is just completely incompetent.
So I am sitting here on New Years staying home alone because I don't want to pay $300 to rent a car and the truck is getting louder each time I drive it. I have to make sure it will get to work on Monday and then to the dealership on ???
Sucks to not have a second vehicle. Hopefully 2022 will be a better year starting off with this getting fix. Happy New Year! ?

Sorry man. I'd let you use mine if I was on the left coast. I drive my '03 Ranger pretty much exclusively so the new one sits.

I would be extremely unhappy too. One more issue on that truck and it would be going down the road if it was mine, and I'm a Ford guy.

On the bright side, if you do decide to get rid of it, used cars and trucks have never been worth more.

Thanks man. It has been extremely frustrating. I did check trade in and it is way higher than what I paid. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't been looking at other trucks.

I would have demanded the Dealer give me a loaner for your trip, as they will be liable for any damages and expense related to the Diff detonating on you in some remote area, especially as they told you to 'just drive it'

I traded in a 2020 Honda Civic SI on this Ranger for 8k more than I paid. I admit that I got a crazy deal on the Honda. It was a once in a lifetime, new salesman, dealer error type deal that they reluctantly stood by, but still, there has never been a phenomenon like this where you can make money on a vehicle.

For perspective in your situation, on my 2003 Ranger the clutch slave cylinder went bad at 38k miles, just out of warranty. They are internal slave cylinders so when they go bad they leak and destroy the clutch and pressure plate with them. Back then, probably 2005, 2006, it was an 800 plus dollar repair and Ford would not help. "Wear Item". Happened on Christmas day and I was stuck. I was furious, plus it was winter and I didn't have a garage at that time, so fixing it myself wasn't an option. I paid to have it fixed and had a very sour taste in my mouth about Ford and the truck at that point. BUT, since then, then truck has given me zero trouble outside of routine maintenance and normal wear and tear items. It is still with me @ 175,000 miles and it's like an old friend, so don't give up yet if you like the truck otherwise.

My dad told me "If it's got tires or tits you're gonna have trouble with it."

I picked it up right as they were closing down for the day and I couldn't pin anyone down. No managers, or supervisors. I made it very clear I was not okay with driving it. The lowly service advisor couldn't help me. Definitely not taking the truck back to this dealer in the future. I will take it out of town to another one if I ever need work done. I should have just fixed the original leak myself... I am no stranger to turning wrenches.

I hear you, had my RV in for a ladder install, even gave them the rear wall diagram, they put it on the wrong side, the side without backing bracing! Wanted to open up the rear wall to add bracing, told them they were on drugs, and to just add a second ladder on the correct side on their dime. So now I get to explain why I have 2 ladders on my RV all the time :)

Update 1/3/2022:
Called the dealer several times today and left messages. Emailed. Texted. No return calls or contact from them. I'm giving them until 10am tomorrow before I roll up in person going "WTF!?!"

Update 1/4-1/5
No one called me back so I drove to the dealer in person. The service advisor that was helping me has been out for a week sick. And no one has been following up on his jobs...?
I talked with the service manager and he said that if the part was coming out of Sacramento they should have received it by now. "I might have gotten cross-shipped." To which told him not to bullshit me. I am a part's guy. I know all of the trick phrases and lingo.
So he is going to have his part's department run a tracking trace on it and call me back supposedly this morning. It is currently 9AM and I am eagerly awaiting that phone call. /s
Any bets on me not getting a call and having to show up in person, again?

Update 1/5 #2 Electric Boogaloo
Tried calling the part's department at the dealer to circumvent the service department and magically got connected to the service department.
So the word is the differential is backordered. No ETA. Truck sounds like a cement mixer. I'm waiting for their service manager to give me a call back about what they are going to do. I think they need to scrape the barrel and get me a loaner/rental at the least.

?

Just the housing? What's making all the noise inside?
