I have mixed feelings on this strike. I'm all for worker's rights and fair pay but the raises that are being asked for seem a bit high. I'm a member of a union with a brand new contract we ratified about 3 weeks ago. The negotiators had to put some concessions aside so we could get a 3% cost of living raise. I read that some of the UAW demands are significant as far as costs.
They are asking for the same raises that executives are getting.

RETIRED!!!!
My wife just retired as the director of the special education department at a local school not far from the Wentzville plant. These guys start out making more money than my wife did at retirement with over 30 years experience and a masters degree plus. Not to mention what our first responders and military make. So, no, I don't feel a bit sorry for them.

probably safe to assume the insanely high wage request is to leave room for negotiation/ 40% is absurd. We also may be being fed misinformation to some degree. Part of the deal is to get new hire salaries on par with longer term workers which translates into "40%"... Sad reality, whatever they get will come out of our pockets not the C Suite. Very Frustrating that those few at the top are paid so much money for so little work.

Now lets do some math.
Take the $30 million she made that year and divided between the 155,000 at GM.
Each person gets $193 extra for the entire year.

If I worked for a company for 20 years and have lots of experience, I should be making good money. So, why would I push for equal pay for new employees that have little to no experience?

Without getting too far into the weeds; I'm able to sit down with my boss and lay out my projects and my performance and my reviews from my clients and negotiate a raise.

A lot of these folks don't have the privilege of doing what I do, and thus collective negotiation. It's a shame it has come to this. I wish these folks the very best outcome.

And she gets nothing.

I wonder what would happen if I demanded a 40%+ raise. Actually I think I know what would happen.
And a 32 hour work week. They quite frankly are being ridiculous. What they forget; 1. COst will be passed on to the consumer and right now with the economy, the consumer is hosed. 2. If the employer is not profitable, no expansion, no innovation and layoffs.

They keep saying in the news that the car makers have record profits. Whether that's true or not, they probably have record expenses too, like every Tom, Dick and Harry in this current economy.

Will the quality of our Rangers go up if they UAW gets paid more? Another article put their average pay at $32/hr, which is $60k or a little more per year. Not too bad for a factory worker, IMHO.

Lol no. It'll go down since ford will justify cutting costs to off-set paying people better wages.

As long as you make a decent salary, what difference does it make what others get paid? the part that sucks about unions, everybody gets treated/paid the same regardless of how they perform. I've worked in unions, along side slackers, who have limited desire to perform, because the union protects them. Maybe someone can come up with the figure on how much union leaders make. I'd bet they are some high salaries. Maybe they should cut their pay, so union members will have to pay lower dues.
Let them price themselves out of a job. Less people will be able to afford a new car, sales down, labor cuts.
Even when I held a union job, I worked my ass off. I've found when I make my boss look good, good comes back to me, ie promotions with higher pay.

I'm generally supportive of unions, but the UAW is notorious for making it impossible to fire underperforming employees. Probably why the guy/gal who's underfilling transmissions on the ranger line still has a job.

They used that same excuse with other companies. They are making "record profits", compared to when? When the gov shut down everything for a flu? And what does "record profits" mean? Did they double profits, or did profits increase 5%?
