They just recalled 740,000 vehicles for transmission defect that can ‌'damage the park system, which in turn could result in vehicles rolling away'. Not Ranger trans issues of course  the recall affects 'certain 2018-2021 Navigator, Expedition, 2020-2021 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and 2021 F-150 vehicles, the regulator said.'

Previously owned a 2019 Ranger before an elderly lady demolished it, ruining several years of building it up to the way I wanted it... starting all over with a newly acquired 2023 Ranger having salvaged a great deal off the old wreck but not everything sadly...

Anyways I was stunned when I jacked up the rear slightly to level the truck out just enough to do the front diff & transfer case fluid changes, the second the rear tires left the ground the dam-thing started to roll back!!! A bit of context... this 2023 was obviously purchased used and I haven't gone through everything yet like I did my 2019. The brakes being one of them, but this truck only has 42K miles however it does come with the Ford tow package and I suspect it did see some tow usage looking at the pin connector. But my 2019 never rolled back once and that truck had more miles prior to me changing the front brakes.

A brake job is on my radar anyways and after that scare got bumped way up my priority list, but its not like the truck doesn't stop fine even suddenly... however not as good as a truck with fresh pads and rotors.

Anyone out there have a similar experience with their Ranger?

Wow, that's more than a little bit of a scare when a vehicle rolls back like that. I'm sorry about your 2019 Ranger. Here is to hoping that you can get your 23 repaired.

Am I missing something what would stop if from rolling with rear tires off the ground, maybe if it was in 4WD. That is why the wheels on the ground should always be chocked.

Given the RWD, the transmission in “park” is stopping the driveshaft from spinning which is only affecting the rear tires. The parking brake only goes to the rear tires as well, so if the rear tires are off the ground, the front tires can spin freely. Always chock the front tires if you’re jacking the rear (and vice versa just to be safe when jacking the front). Good lesson to learn now without anything breaking or anyone getting hurt. I’ve never owned a RWD vehicle so I almost made the same mistake until my granddad was stopping by to drop something off and saw me out there and called me out on it
