This happened to on my F150(same setup).
I used pliers to bend those 2 metal tabs in as I turned the key to release.

I then tossed the thing in the garbage.
I love it. "I tossed it in the garbage) 😂

I'm pretty sure the key 'locks' into place when the cylinder turns so you have to turn the cylinder back to the 'locked' position for the key to come out. It allows you to pull on the key to remove the whole assembly from the bumper.

Actually no, the whole thing just swivels around uselessly.

first time i tried mine i had this happen. however, when reinstalled the correct way and locked back in normal position the key came out nice and easy no fuss. its just how they work i guess.

It worked okay the first time I played with the spare. This time it jammed up!

BINGO!!!

I tapped it on the ground, bottom of the cylinder and it came right out!!

Genius!!

And that is why Enthusiast Internet Forums are so fantastic!

You might have to remove your damper first…

Maybe tap/rap it on a hard surface to see if it resets, bottom side.

that good news! I wonder if the locks get dirt and grime in them from the road. maybe we should all start giving ours a cleaning to prevent the key from sticking.

Great thread! I think I might get a key cut without the electronic part and just store it with the jack.
My son-in law manages an ACE hardware so he can make the key.
It does look as if the metal key part could be replaced on the FOB ?

Edit: SOLVED!!

I mean KEY STUCK, not stock.

Anyways...

What a piece of garbage! Help!

Key won't come out or even turn.

Argh!

That's WD-40 making it shine.

Try some penetrating oil. Mine was sticky, but I spray some in the lock periodically and it's stayed free to turn

Maybe, although the plastic cap keeps the lock clean as a whistle.

Although it probably couldn't hurt.

Am I the only one reading this thinking "Spare tire crank lock?" Where is that uncooperative thing located? I just rotated my tires for the first time a few weeks ago and encountered no such headache inducing item.

It's located in the center of the rear bumper to the right of the license plate. You have to use the key first to remove the plug then sick the long crank arm (under the rear seat) in there to lower the spare tire. Similar to this pic.

It is also a deleted item on later model Rangers, so you may not have one being a '23 owner.

Do not have that item. Mine is just a plastic cover. Basically just a dust cap over the access hole.

Edit: added pic of 2023 "lock."
