Troubleshooting step 1: remove that damper.
Troubleshooting step 2: make sure nothing is stuck in the closing mechanisms.
Troubleshooting step 3: apply 303 graphene and see if that helps.
Troubleshooting step 4: sell the truck and buy a Bronco...

?

As promised here’s a picture. If you lower the tailgate half way, you can slide the right hand side out of its slotted hinge. Even a small stone or piece of wood could be the issue, or something in the bed where the tailgate hinges up.

This!

My damper will groan and screech like a banshee in the cold but not make it close funny. It may move a tad slower but not enough that ever noticed even below zero.

Not my BedRug is a massive PIA if the flap between the tailgate and bed is wet. Last winter I melted a few small holes in it using a heat gun to get the thing fully open.

This year I soaked it good with alcohol and it hasn't frozen yet. Not sure that's a long-term solution (although, alcohol can seem to solve many issues).

I bet Duke's right with the removal bit. I put on a tailgate lock last month and could see where it could move up a bit and cause issues. Maybe even get some crap or ice in there making it not seat fully in. From your pics, it does look like that to me too.

black thing is a plastic spacer shim thing that's just loose in there, maybe it moved or got bound?

Until the love bugs plaster your truck, and the humidity hits... ?

You forgot Hurricanes... I will still take all that over -20 and snow.
And random tornados.

No flooding where I'm at and insurance is pretty normal. We own two homes and land. The homes insurance is under 2k a year. Everything paid for. Taxes are cheap also. Do your home work not everywhere is expensive in any state. You can get expensive also in any state. Just go look for it.

I have fiends that live in Texas and there property tax is like 8k a year. Noooo way. LOL

We are quite happy here.
