I live the negative reviews that say things like “it rides like a truck” because they expect a car like ride.

He had a copy of my driver's license (so he knew who I was and where I lived) so it wouldn't have been that hard to find me if I didn't come back. Everything is just a little bit more relaxed and "yeah sure go ahead" here in the rural parts of the country.

I don't like salespersons in general, but I really don't like them coming along on the test drive because I don't like hearing the sales pitch constantly. I want a break from it all so I can actually think about what I'm doing and not be bothered by them asking "so what are you thinking". By the time I go into the dealer (or any store usually) I already know everything there is to know about the product I'm looking at and am basically just ticking a couple boxes to make sure I'm correct (namely my opinion on ride quality in this case). I know more than the salesperson about the product, so there's nothing they can say that will persuade me in any way. In your example I wouldn't have needed/wanted to asked about the rear disc brakes on the Taco, because going in I would've already done enough research to know what I needed to have an opinion on whether they were good or not (not that you didn't already know either of course). Because obviously the salesperson in your story didn't know enough to give you a correct answer, so why trust them at all.

Salespersons' job is to convince people into buying something by saying pretty much whatever they have to, whether it's factually correct or not. A perfect purchase for me is dealing with no salespersons at all, so any chance I have to be rid of them during the buying process I'll take.

Sorry this turned into a rant about sales. haha
My mind was made up 2 1/2 years ago to buy the present generation Ranger, road testing the Taco was simply to discover why it is the number 1 selling vehicle in Hawaii, of which I still haven't a clue.
As for me inquiring about the rear drum situation I just wanted to see what her reaction was, it was total BS.
Before I became a firefighter I was a line mechanic at a Lincoln-Mercury/Honda dealership for 14 years, so I'm keenly aware of the advantages of discs, even my lowly 2002 Honda CR-V has rear discs.
In those 14 years, I've seen all sorts of sales department shenanigans...if they could sell left-hand thread light bulbs they most surely would...lol

I think their beef with the Ranger is that it's not new-new, that it's a model that's been around in other markets for awhile. I test drove everything, the Ranger and the Frontier were pretty much my two choices, but the options and the interior of the Ranger was years ahead of the Frontier.

Drum brakes on an expensive truck - granted they are on cheap cars (my sons Nissan Sentra which cost $11,000 brand new). I'm in shock over that one.

The reason I had no problem buying the 2019 Ranger was because it was a proven truck and I really like the way it looks compared to the other trucks.

Yes the trolls on an F150 sight I lurked on liked to point out that this is an 8 year old platform. After taking delivery of my 2020 Ranger l don't agree with that at all. The synch 3 system is much different than my 2015 F150 and will take some getting used to, but I am well pleased so far

I watched a YouTube video a while back that had where the reviewer didn't like the Ranger. Said at highway speeds it was squirrelly. I test drove a 2019 Ranger, unfortunately the salesman didn't listen to me when I said I'd like to test drive it up to 60 mph and we were just on city streets. Was one area I was able to get it up to 50 mph for about a mile and it don't seem squirrelly to me. My wife and I liked the Ranger better then any other 2019 and 2020 mid-sized truck we were in. Now need to find one the color we like with the options we like and get a test drive out on the highway.
I can attest that the Ranger is not squirrely at high speeds. I've hit the speed limiter (109) and felt completely in control and firmly planted to the pavement. I wouldn't be afraid to go even faster than the speed limiter allows.

I commute 80 miles one way to work every day, most of which is interstate. I typically set my cruise at 75 or 80 and the ride is just as smooth as it is at lower speeds. The adaptive cruise is also worth every penny. :sunglasses:

My last two new vehicle purchases were made through the internet and in both cases I met the sales person on the day I took deliver. Both of the vehicles were factory ordered, not a vehicle off the lot. I understand that buying off the lot would involve dealing with a salesperson but when buying off the lot I knew going in exactly what I wanted and the price I was willing to pay so it was pretty cut and dry; they either had the vehicle and price i wanted or I was leaving. Twice I was called back into the office by their intercom as I was walking to my car. LOL

Hi Folk,

Being inside the company for 30 years or so, you have to develop a somewhat thick skin to this one person opinionated articles where there is a hidden agenda. In the end the market place dictates the success or failure of a product, regardless of one POS author of an article. I know...they gored your OX and you do not like it..I do not either, but the best approach is to squash these damning articles is sales volumes and sound engineering that results in positive experiences. In my tenure as head of Ranger Vehicle Engineering, my volume was 430,000 vehicles a year. We blew away the competition. Edumnds and who ever else the competition contracted meant diddily squat. The 5G Ranger will sink or swim on its own merits based on the numbers sold...If it was a Trud, like the the Fiat 500...it shows... Taco and such are selling...Ranger has to meet or exceed. So far I am impressed with the Ranger, of which I had zero input... I think it is a worthy offering...sure there things I would have done differently like a two piece driveline, but it is a solid state of the art competitor... Let the cards fall where they are dealt. I believe Ford Ranger will be in the mix. I was fortunate to be on board when Ranger was tops

To hear of Ranger owners that have incredible high mileage during my tenure at the helm of Vehicle Engineering makes me proud. No accolades from the press can do as much as to know the number of folks that loved their old previous generation Ranger... It makes this "old fart,s" day!

Best,

The tech inside is updated along with the engine. They are talking about the platform being a tried and proven truck frame. That is what I love about the truck - especially since it was develop for the Australian outback.

Ha! I gotta tell my brother that he drives a 2019 El Camino by Honda, his previous 'Camino was an '07. Truth be told, I've driven his 2019 RTL-E, its a solid and competent vehicle, but it's styling comes off as being too "dainty" for me...notice that I stated "vehicle"!

My, My! Such language!
Truth be told, I've got more colorful words to respond to "it rides like a truck" comment, but there may be women and children present...

Most of the people who review vehicles don't even have the comprehension of mechanical operations and functional diagnostics to formulate an educated opinion. They simply use buzz words they read from other reviews and briefly touch on specs that are given to them on a nice print out. Its impossible to consider anything they say as informative. Think of them as the used car salesmen of vehicle reviews.
