The little "channel" funnels bugs to the brakes ... this in turn makes them squeak ... then Ford can charge you for a brake job ... :flag:

It's to reduce drag from the wheel well. Nothing to do with drag on the front bumper. Fast moving air across a cavity (the wheel well) produces a lot of pressure drag. By speeding up the air in the wheel well it brings the pressure down so it is a little closer to the pressure of the air coming around the bumper/fender. Less pressure differential means less drag. Same reason the Honda Insight used to have those terrible looking wheel covers in the rear. Wheel wells typically account for 25% of total drag.
