I'm putting together a small apartment reloading kit, for this round and a few others.

I'm late to the revolver game. Looking at the S&W Mountain gun and Ruger Wiley Clapp both in 10mm.

I'll buy a single action one of these days. I'm not a revolver guy, but they are so neat looking. I might go for .44 magnum, since I already have the Model 29 Dirty Harry gun.

I got sick of the price on .44 with how much I shoot. Ended up with the Lyman 8 Station Turret Press. Well worth it for me. The turret is nice so I dont have to install dies for each step and have enough room to add a couple other calibers.

I bought the lee hand press as we are living in a small apt while we build our house. Not optimal but, it all goes in a tote and when I finally get everything, Ill knock out a few rounds here and there.

I find it kind of cathartic to just sit down and pump out a few rounds here and there... Or just prep some brass and inspect it. Make sure everything is fine tuned.
Relaxing in it's own way.

I have to share my most recent project that came out terrible...

...on purpose.

The idea was I wanted to make this look like something you'd find in the passenger seat of a Lambo parked out in front of a Miami nightclub. The theme was derived from a fake gentlemen's club some of my friends and I started as a joke to annoy our wives.

I was originally going to try to nickle plate the gun myself but that turned into a failure. I ended up dropping it off locally to a business that does custom tattoo guns for tattoo artists. I told them the colors I wanted and it was done unless than a week!

The logo on the birdshead grip is a UV transfer decal and I was surprised by the quality of the decals.

The wives roll their eyes because we've created a bunch of branded items for this fake club and it has all come out awesome. Hahahahaha!

Keep in mind, this is supposed to look terrible and gaudy on purpose. Think Miami nightclub.

I confirmed that the screws pulled threads, luckily not on the slide side.I have given up on this one. I am going to my local gun store to check out different red dots to replace this with.

I helped Vortex during development of the Defender series of red dots, have shot them on shotguns in Thailand while on the US team, and shot them exclusively on various pistols for competition. I'm partial to them for obvious reasons.

All that being said, here is what I would do.
-acquire a "DPP" pattern plate for your pistol
-pick up a Vortex Defender ST dot
-order VC3 Vibratite from Amazon, "red" is the one you're looking for.
-use a torque driver to torque the plate to the pistol to the correct spec for your handgun.
-put a drop of VC3 on the recoil lugs of the plate and set the ST dot down onto the plate
-torque the correct provided screws that came with the ST dot to the plate without adding anything, and torque them to no more than 12in/lb
-let everything sit overnight at minimum
-zero your dot and enjoy

I've done this exact process for "bedding" the recoil lugs of optics plates for quite some time now and I've noticed two things. I have broken exactly ZERO dots, and I've never had to adjust my zero unless I changed ammo.


Overtorquing the screws for the red dots can do multiple things, but can include physically bending the optic's housing itself, causing issues zeroing/holding zero. It can also cause broken plates, stripped threads,.... Also, adding a liquid like loctite to threads results in a higher torque value than what your torque driver will show. If you add loctite, reduce that 12in/lb number to 7-8in/lb.

Also......make sure you use IN/LB, not FT/LB.

I have watched many, many reviews on all of these optics and I think they are all good options. My choice will most likely come down to how I like it when I see it in person. Excluding the EPS line, they are within $60 of each other, considering the discount I can get.

The Vortex Defenders have gotten 50/50 good/bad reviews. It appears they've fixed the refresh issue on new models. Thoughts on that?

I never had issues with the refresh rate and ran a prototype for years on shotgun and pistol. It was apparently more notable with certain people's eyes.
